Clubs are closing, young people are getting more sober, and parties seem to be dying out—headlines like these regularly appear in the news. The reality is different: cities are adapting to visitors’ new habits, and nightlife is shifting to new neighborhoods, rooftops, underground venues, and street spaces. Time Out, in collaboration with Intrepid Travel, surveyed locals around the world and compiled a ranking of the most vibrant destinations for those planning evening adventures.

Bangkok: Street Bars and Megaclubs

The capital of Thailand combines several types of nightlife at once: cozy street spots, megaclubs, rooftop cocktail bars, and LGBTQ+ parties. A distinctive feature of Bangkok is that the bar atmosphere naturally spills out onto the street. For example, Soi Nana in Chinatown is a narrow alley lined with venues such as G.O.D. (Genius on Drugs), Tep Bar, and Ba Hao, located in an old trading house with cocktails served on the top floor. Nearby is Bar Temp., which hosts local bands and DJs almost every night. The list of famous venues also includes Sing Sing Theater—a red-lantern cabaret that appeared in the third season of the series *The White Lotus*.

Bangkok’s nightlife also offers a culinary experience: from fine-dining restaurants to pad kaprao on a plastic stool at 2 a.m. Look for rooftop bars with panoramic views in Thong Lor and Silom; the latter neighborhood is also known for its gay bars and queer venues. According to a Time Out survey, 73% of city residents rated Bangkok’s nightlife as “good” or “great,” and a panel of experts gave the city a score of 95.

Berlin: Techno Culture Under UNESCO Protection

The German capital is undergoing structural changes: rising rents and redevelopment have led to a phenomenon critics have dubbed “Clubsterben”—the gradual demise of legendary clubs. Germany is working to reclassify clubs as cultural institutions, and in 2024, UNESCO recognized Berlin’s techno culture as intangible cultural heritage. Berghain, Tresor, and KitKat remain open, and in December, Renate managed to avoid eviction and return to daytime open-air parties alongside Sisyphos and Else.

Meanwhile, the city’s nightlife has fragmented into nomadic collectives. The sex-positive queer collective Lecken moves between Kreuzwerk and OXI, sells tickets through Resident Advisor, and mobilizes the community on Instagram. Other organizers reveal their venues on Telegram just a few hours before the event starts, while ÆDEN fills the summer of 2026 with trance, groove, and techno. According to a survey, 78% of Berliners rated the nightlife positively, and 100% of the Time Out expert panel voted for the city; 62% of residents named laid-back bars and pubs as the capital’s main asset after sunset.

New York: A Variety of Parties for Everyone

New York has become a bit “sleepier”—it’s trendy these days to book a table for 6:00 p.m.—but the city’s nightlife is only becoming more diverse. Formats range from raves under one of New York’s bridges to sets at Pacha, from dance parties for millennials that end at 10:00 PM to “electric slide” dancing on the stairs in Harlem. A separate segment consists of wine clubs geared toward BIPOC and queer communities.

According to a Time Out survey, 82% of New Yorkers rated the nightlife as “good” or “great”—the third-highest score among all cities in the ranking. At the same time, New York received the lowest rating for affordability: only 40% of residents described the city’s parties as affordable. Respondents most often described the city with the adjectives “exciting,” “diverse,” and “lively,” and Time Out’s expert panel gave New York a 95% approval rating, propelling the city to third place in the ranking.

Melbourne: Pubs, Clubs, and Drag Bingo

The nightlife of this Australian metropolis resembles an open-world adventure game. Fans of live music will enjoy the numerous pubs, while dance enthusiasts will love the Solace Bar and Coil clubs with their powerful sound systems. For the LGBTQIA+ community, there’s Pride of Our Footscray, where drag bingo, trivia nights, and stand-up comedy are part of the regular weekly lineup.

Trends in the city are constantly shifting, but the nightlife scene remains eclectic and unpredictable. Melbourne ranked third in Time Out’s expert assessment of nightlife; 77% of residents rated it “good” or “amazing,” and 59% praised its community atmosphere. Residents rated cocktail bars and laid-back pubs as the city’s strongest offerings—61% and 72%, respectively.

São Paulo: Rooftop Clubs in Historic Buildings

In Brazil’s largest metropolis, the trend of nightclubs in historic buildings—especially on their rooftops—is gaining momentum. Matiz, located on the 11th floor, made it onto Dua Lipa’s personal list; the venue features sets by renowned vinyl DJs, high-quality sound systems, and cocktails. Ephigenia is a two-story venue with two dance floors, house music nights, and afternoon vinyl sessions. The rooftop of the 25th floor of the Edifício Martinelli—São Paulo’s first skyscraper—hosts samba and electronic music parties.

A Balsa is perfect for a cozy dinner followed by dancing, while Tokyo is a karaoke bar with private rooms. According to a survey, 74% of city residents rated the quality of nightlife highly, and 71% praised the availability of cocktails. The Time Out expert panel gave the city a score of 70%, and 72% of residents say it’s easy to find a community in the city.

The Time Out ranking includes five more destinations worth considering when planning a trip:

• Medellín, Colombia. Reggaeton dominates the clubs Dulcinea, Tutaina, Medallo Club, and Medussa. For a cozier vibe, there are underground and lo-fi bars—including Mad Radio (with branches in Miami and New York) and 55 dB Listening Bar. The main nightlife districts are Laureles and Poblado, though the scene has shifted from Parque Lleras to Provenza and Manila. According to a survey, 87% of city residents rated the nightlife as “good” or “great”—the highest score in the ranking.
• Johannesburg, South Africa. Gwigwi Mrwebi Street remains the main nightlife district, home to Club A.M., AND Club, Bad Manors, and Carfax. The city’s DJs effortlessly transition from deep house to techno, Afro-house, gkom, and drum ’n’ bass.

• Melville and Rosebank are home to cocktail bars, and for live music, locals recommend Six Bar on 7th Street and A Street Bar Named Desire on Bolton Road. 80% of residents noted that it’s easy to find a community in the city.
• Brighton, United Kingdom. This British seaside city maintains its status as a hub for LGBTQ+ nightlife thanks to venues like Revenge, The Queen’s Arms, and Bar Broadway. Patterns features resident DJ MIMI spinning a mix of jungle and Mauritian sega, while Casablanca—the city’s oldest club—offers live soul, funk, disco, and pop. Themed parties include “Party in your Pants” (a feminist paint rave) and “Fairytopia” (pop music in a high-fantasy setting). 84% of residents named Brighton as a city where it’s easy to make connections—the highest score for a sense of community in the ranking.

Craft beer is worth trying at Great Leap Brewing, classic cocktails at Shifter, and live indie performances in the basement of Modernista. Groundless Factory, dubbed “Beijing’s Berghain,” along with Zhao Dai, Solo, and Pillbox, lead the techno scene. The collectives Rave AM and Yinyang Productions organize daytime coffee raves and house parties in churches, parks, and hot pot restaurants. The city was rated the most affordable in the ranking—77% for affordability.
• Amsterdam, Netherlands. Nightlife has expanded far beyond the city center: in Noord, Oost, De Pijp, and Jordaan, bars and clubs are within walking distance of hotels. Noord has become the new epicenter thanks to Garage Noord, waterfront venues like Pllek, and cultural spaces that combine clubs, art, and live music. Loop 51 (a music bar) and Door 74 (a cocktail bar) represent a modern approach to nightlife. WorldPride 2026 will draw additional attention to the inclusive LGBTQ+ scene, led by Club Raum. 67% of residents highly rated the nightlife, and 77% appreciated how easy it is to find a community.
