The ranking was compiled based on votes from over 1,000 travel professionals. Experts evaluated the beaches not only for their visual beauty but also for water quality, calmness of the sea, number of visitors, distance from mass tourism, natural environment, uniqueness of the landscape, and likelihood of good weather.

It was precisely this combination of factors that earned Fteri the highest rating. It is a relatively secluded beach with white cliffs, a pebble shoreline, and crystal-clear turquoise water. There are no large hotels, beach clubs, lounge chairs, or cafes here, which has allowed the location to retain its almost wild character even amid Kefalonia’s popularity.

Interestingly, Fteri’s success wasn’t limited to the European ranking. On the global list of the World’s 50 Best Beaches 2026, it took second place worldwide, trailing only Entalula Beach in the Philippines.

Top 10 Best Beaches in Europe in 2026

Beaches from six countries made it into the top ten of the ranking. Greece had the most entries among the leaders—three in total—while Spain and Italy each have two beaches represented.

1. Fteri, Greece — a secluded beach on Kefalonia with white cliffs and turquoise waters.

2. Cala Macarela, Spain — a picturesque cove on Menorca with crystal-clear waters and pine-covered slopes.

3. Cala dei Gabbiani, Italy—a wild beach in Sardinia, surrounded by cliffs and a natural coastline.

4. Kaputash, Turkey —a small beach between Kaş and Kalkan, nestled between tall cliffs.

5. Porto Katsiki, Greece — one of Lefkada’s most famous beaches, with towering white cliffs.

6. Santa Giulia, France — a Corsican cove with shallow waters and light-colored sand.

7. Playa Cofeté, Spain — a long, wild beach on Fuerteventura, known for its rugged volcanic landscape.

8. Praia da Falésia, Portugal — a beach in the Algarve, recognizable for its long red-orange cliffs.

9. Porto Timoní, Greece — an unusual double cove on the island of Corfu.

10. La Pelosa, Italy — a beach in Sardinia with very shallow, crystal-clear water and light-colored sand.

The ranking shows that in 2026, experts particularly highly rated not large resort areas, but natural coves and remote coastlines with minimal development. Fteri on Kefalonia: Why This Beach Ranked No. 1

Fteri is located on the west coast of Kefalonia and stands out for precisely what is becoming increasingly rare at popular Mediterranean resorts: minimal infrastructure and a sense of seclusion. The coastline is surrounded by light-colored limestone cliffs, and the water has a rich turquoise hue characteristic of the Ionian Sea.

One of the main reasons the beach retains its wild appearance is its more challenging access. You can reach Fteri either on foot via a trail through rugged terrain or by sea, specifically by water taxi from the Zola area. It is precisely the lack of easy road access that keeps large tourist crowds at bay, even during peak season.

The beach itself lacks the usual resort amenities: cafes, bars, lounge chairs, umbrellas, and large hotel complexes. Therefore, travelers should bring their own water, food, sunscreen, and everything else they need for a few hours of relaxation.

World’s 50 Best Beaches recognizes Fteri not only for its scenery but also for its combination of clear water, natural surroundings, relatively few people, and its remoteness from popular tourist routes.

Spain Topped the Ranking

Spain leads the top 20 in the ranking with six beaches. Cala Macarellia on Menorca ranked highest at No. 2, while Playa Cofete on Fuerteventura took 7th place. Also making the top 20 were Playa de Bolonia (No. 12), Cala des Moro (No. 15), Playa de Rodas (No. 18), and Playa de Sotavento (No. 20).

Italy has four beaches in the top 20: Cala dei Gabbiani ranked 3rd, La Pelosa—10th, Torre Redda—13th, and Cala Cotichio—19th. Greece is represented by three locations, all of which made it into the top ten: Fteri—No. 1, Porto Katsiki—No. 5, and Porto Timon—No. 9.

Thus, Spain dominates in terms of the number of beaches, while Greece dominates in terms of their rankings. All three Greek locations in the Top 20 are also among Europe’s Top 10.
