What is the Interrail Global Pass and how does it work?
The Interrail Global Pass is a universal rail pass that allows you to travel by train through 33 European countries without having to buy a separate ticket for each route. The pass covers over 30,000 destinations and is valid on trains operated by rail companies participating in the program.
The main feature of the Interrail Global Pass is the ability to determine the duration of your trip and the number of travel days yourself. For example, if you purchase a 5-day pass within a month, you can spend three days in Paris, then head to Brussels, Amsterdam, or Berlin. Days when you’re relaxing in a city and not using the trains aren’t counted toward your travel days.
How the Interrail pass works:
- One pass for 33 countries. You can cross borders and ride trains operated by carriers that are part of the Interrail network.
- Unlimited trips per day. On a single activated travel day, you’re allowed to take multiple train trips with no limit on the number of trips.
- Flexible date selection. Passes are available with specific travel days or with continuous validity for a set period.
- E-ticket. You can store your pass in the Rail Planner mobile app, which also provides train schedules and route planning.
- Additional transportation options. Some ferry companies and other carriers offer Interrail pass holders free travel or special discounts in accordance with the program’s terms and conditions.
However, the pass does not guarantee a free seat on every train. For many high-speed, international, and overnight trains, seats must be reserved in advance for an additional fee. Regional trains are usually available without such a reservation.
It’s important to distinguish between Interrail and Eurail. Interrail is intended for residents of Europe, regardless of their citizenship, while Eurail is for travelers living outside Europe. Both passes allow you to explore the European rail network, but they have separate terms of use.

How much does the Interrail Global Pass cost in 2026?
The cost of the Interrail Global Pass in 2026 starts at €212 for four days of travel within a single month. The price depends on the number of days, the pass’s validity period, the passenger’s age, and the class of service. Two formats are available: the Flexi Pass for travel on selected days and the Continuous Pass for continuous travel.
Prices for the Interrail Flexi Pass
This option is ideal for travelers who plan to stay in cities for a few days. You pay only for the selected travel days, not for the entire duration of your stay in Europe.
Current fares for second-class adult passes:
- 4 days within 1 month – €212
- 5 days within 1 month – €239
- 7 days within 1 month – €286
- 10 days within 2 months – €335
- 15 days within 2 months – €415
For example, a 7-day pass allows you to spread out seven days of train travel over the course of a month. During this time, you can visit France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany, staying in each country for as long as your itinerary allows.
How much does a Continuous Interrail Pass cost?
The Continuous Pass is designed for intensive travel. It allows you to use the rail network every day for the entire duration of the pass.
Prices start at €357 for 15 consecutive days. Passes are also available for 22 days, 1, 2, and 3 months. For example, a 22-day pass starts at €440, and a one-month pass starts at €522.
Interrail Discounts for Youth, Children, and Seniors
Special terms apply to certain age groups:
- Youth aged 12 to 27 – discounted Youth Pass rates
- Adults aged 28 to 59 – standard pass price
- Travelers aged 60 and older – discounted Senior Pass rates
- Children aged 4 to 11 – may travel for free with an appropriate child pass when accompanied by an adult. A maximum of two free child passes are allowed per adult.
Children under 4 years old typically travel without a separate pass, provided they do not require their own seat.
It’s important to note that the price of the Interrail Global Pass does not include mandatory seat reservations on some high-speed and overnight trains. The cost of such reservations must be budgeted for separately.
In a previous article, we discussed 10 routes across Europe where rail travel is faster than air travel.
In which European countries is the Interrail Global Pass valid?
The Interrail Global Pass is valid in 33 European countries, covering popular tourist destinations in Western and Central Europe, Scandinavia, the Baltic states, and part of the Balkan region. A single pass allows you to combine several countries into a single itinerary, using rail carriers participating in the program.
As of 2026, the Interrail network includes:
- Western Europe: France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and Ireland
- Southern Europe: Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, and Turkey
- Central Europe: Austria, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary
- Northern Europe and the Baltics: Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania
- Balkan countries: Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, North Macedonia, Bulgaria, and Romania
A complete list of countries and rail routes is available on the official Interrail website.
However, a country’s inclusion on the list does not mean that the pass is valid on all of its rail routes. For example, in some Balkan countries, international rail service is limited, so you may need to plan part of your trip using other modes of transportation. Before your trip, it’s a good idea to check available routes on Rail Planner.
Special rules apply to Interrail travel within your country of residence. A Global Pass holder can use one travel day to leave their home country and another to return. Both trips must take place within the pass’s validity period and use the travel days included in the pass.
For travelers planning to visit only one country, there is an alternative—the Interrail One Country Pass. This pass is valid within the selected country and may be more cost-effective than the Global Pass if no international travel is planned.

How do I buy and activate an Interrail Global Pass?
You can purchase an Interrail Global Pass online on the official Interrail website. To use the e-pass, you’ll need a smartphone with the Rail Planner app. You don’t have to activate the pass immediately after purchase—under standard terms, you can do so within 11 months, unless a special offer specifies a different timeframe.
How to get an Interrail pass and start your trip:
1. Choose the right pass. Select the number of travel days, seat class, and age category. When purchasing, specify your country of residence and personal information as it appears on your documents.
2. Pay for the pass online. After purchase, you’ll receive an email with your Pass number and activation instructions.
3. Download Rail Planner. Open the “My Pass” section, add the pass you purchased using the number and last name you provided during checkout.
4. Create a route. In the My Trip section, you can plan trips, search for train routes, and add the destinations you need.
5. Activate your pass. Enter the number of the passport or ID you’ll be traveling with and the pass’s start date.
6. Add a trip to your ticket. Before boarding, activate the corresponding travel day if you’re using a Flexi Pass, and add the specific train to your e-ticket.
During inspection, you must show the conductor your ticket with the QR code in Rail Planner and the document specified during activation. If a seat reservation is required for the selected train, you must also present it.
It’s important to note that saving a route in the app does not automatically activate your ticket. Each trip must be added to your Pass before boarding. An internet connection is required for this. Additionally, your e-Pass must be validated online at least once every 24 hours.
We previously reported that direct trains are running again between Finland and Sweden.
Which trains require an additional fee with Interrail?
The Interrail Global Pass covers the cost of travel but does not always include seat reservations. For high-speed, international, and overnight trains, you often need to purchase a separate reservation. The cost depends on the carrier, route, and class of service.
Where do you need to reserve seats?
Additional costs most often arise on the following routes:
- France. TGV high-speed trains usually require a mandatory reservation. This applies to popular routes from Paris to Lyon, Marseille, and other cities.
- Italy. Seats must be reserved separately for the high-speed Frecciarossa, Frecciargento, and Frecciabianca trains. Regional Trenitalia trains are usually available without an additional fee.
- Spain. Most AVE high-speed trains and many long-distance routes require reservations.
- International high-speed routes. Reservations are required on the Eurostar, particularly between London, Paris, Brussels, and Amsterdam. The number of seats available to Interrail pass holders is limited.
- Night trains. On Nightjet routes and other night train services, you must pay extra for a seat, couchette, or sleeper compartment.
Reservation fees can range from a few euros on select domestic routes to several dozen euros on international high-speed routes. Sleeping accommodations on night trains are usually more expensive. You should check the exact amount for your specific trip.
We previously reported that Eurostar will connect London and Antwerp with direct trains in December 2026.
How to avoid extra costs?
If your main goal is to travel cheaply by train in Europe, you should consider regional and intercity routes that don’t require seat reservations. They may be slower, but they often allow you to use a rail pass without additional fees.
The Rail Planner app has a “No seat reservations required” filter. It helps you find routes where you don’t need to pay extra for a seat. For popular high-speed trains, especially in the summer and during holidays, it’s best to make reservations in advance.
Be sure to check private rail operators separately. Not all European rail companies participate in the Interrail program, so you’ll have to buy a full-price ticket for some trips.
According to the official Interrail map for 2026, the surcharge for a seat reservation on the TGV is approximately €9–35, on the Eurostar – €15–35, and on the Italian Frecciarossa and Frecciargento – €13. These amounts should be factored into your budget, especially if your route covers several countries.
We previously explained how train tickets work in Europe: the differences between the Global Pass and the One Country Pass, how much they cost, and when you need to reserve a seat separately.
The Best Routes Through Europe with the Interrail Global Pass
The Interrail Global Pass allows you to combine several European countries into a single trip, determining the number of stops and the length of your stay in each city on your own. For your first train journey, it’s best to choose routes with well-developed connections, where travel between capitals takes only a few hours.
Here are four interesting train routes through Europe that you can plan with a single pass.
Prague – Vienna – Bratislava – Budapest
4 countries · 7–10 days
One of the most convenient routes through Central Europe. The journey begins in Prague, from where you can reach Vienna in about four hours. Next is Bratislava, located about an hour by train from the Austrian capital. You can end the route in Budapest, known for its thermal baths, historic buildings, and panoramic views of the Danube.
A 4-day Flexi Pass valid for one month is sufficient for this itinerary. Most major trips can be made without a mandatory seat reservation.
Paris – Brussels – Amsterdam – Berlin
4 countries · 10–12 days
This itinerary is ideal for those who want to visit four European capitals in one trip. You can travel from Paris to Brussels by high-speed train in about an hour and a half. From there, it’s convenient to continue your journey to Amsterdam and then head to Berlin.
An important detail: Eurostar international trains require mandatory seat reservations, which incur an additional fee. To save money, it’s worth comparing available train connections in advance.
Milan – Zurich – Munich – Salzburg
4 countries · 8–10 days
This route combines Italian architecture, the Swiss Alps, and historic cities in Germany and Austria. The journey between Italy and Switzerland is particularly picturesque, as the train passes through mountain valleys and near Alpine lakes.
Travelers can spend a few days in Milan, visit Zurich’s Old Town, explore Munich, and end their journey in Salzburg. A 4-day pass can be used for the main trips, but be sure to check for surcharges on international routes.
Copenhagen – Stockholm – Oslo
3 countries · 8–12 days
The Scandinavian route allows you to explore three northern capitals. The trip from Copenhagen to Stockholm takes about five hours, and from Stockholm to Oslo—about five to six hours, depending on the train.
In Denmark, be sure to visit the historic Nyhavn harbor; in Sweden, explore the Old Town of Gamla Stan; and in Norway, take in Oslo’s waterfront and the famous Opera House. On some Scandinavian trains, you must reserve seats in advance, so it’s best to plan your itinerary before your trip begins.
Additional ideas for train travel in Europe are available in the official Interrail route guide. Travel times are approximate and depend on the date, schedule, and selected train service.
