There are three types of higher education institutions in Serbia: universities, colleges of applied sciences, and colleges of academic research. There are also some international universities, such as the University of New York at Belgrade, which offers MBA programs taught in English.
Serbian educational institutions award the three traditional levels of degree: bachelor's, master's (science or art), and Ph.D.’s. Universities are the only institutions that offer all three levels of higher education. Colleges of Applied Sciences and Colleges of Academic Sciences may award both bachelor's and specialist degrees, but not master's or doctoral degrees.
There are 17 universities in Serbia; 8 public and 9 private. There are also 47 public and 17 private colleges of applied sciences, as well as 3 public and 5 private academic colleges.
The Serbian higher education system complies with the European standards set out in the Bologna Process and uses the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). Most of the courses are taught in Serbian, but some programs and courses are available in English. International students planning to study in Serbia usually have to complete one year of language training in Serbia before starting to study their academic discipline.
We would like to add that Serbia also participates in Erasmus. Erasmus allows you to take a semester, a year or even a whole qualification or internship abroad. Your nationality doesn't matter, you just need to study at a school that participates in Erasmus.
What documents are required for admission to the university?
In general, the list of documents that you need to submit for admission may vary slightly, depending on the chosen university and faculty. In general, to enter a Serbian university you need to submit:
Application form.
Valid passport and passport-sized photos.
A previous high school diploma or degree certificate, depending on the level you are applying for.
Sufficient level of Proficiency in English or Serbian, confirmed by the results of the language test.
Please note that international students must have health insurance in their home country or private health insurance while studying in Serbia. Health insurance is mandatory and students must provide proof of insurance when applying for a visa or residence permit. It is recommended that students have coverage of up to 20,000 euros.
More information about admission to universities in Serbia can be found on the website: https://www.studyinserbia.rs/en
International students studying in Serbia will need temporary residence. In addition to a passport, application form, and photo, prospective students must provide evidence of their planned stay in Serbia (a certificate from the university about their enrollment), as well as proof that they have enough funds for their stay. The application must be submitted at the Serbian embassy or consulate in the student's country of residence.
However, we should add that students who are not eligible for visa-free entry to Serbia can enter Serbia on a tourist visa and apply for temporary residence upon arrival.
