Traveling with pets

A health certificate issued by a public veterinary hospital certifying that the pet is healthy and has recently been vaccinated against distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvovirus, and rabies, and is free of external parasites and other infectious diseases, and requires registration at the Gambia Veterinary Department upon entry into the country.

Within 72 hours of arrival in The Gambia, the pet should be taken to a veterinary clinic for a physical examination.

Your local driver's license can be used in the Gambia as long as it is written in English. If you plan to use a local driver's license in the Gambia, but it is not written in English, you must obtain an international driver's license.

Important rules

• Always carry your driver's license with you
• Do not use mobile phones while driving
• Foreigners must be at least 23 years old and have at least three years of driving experience
• You can never drive drunk in the Gambia because the maximum blood alcohol content in this country is 0.0%
• Even if you ride a motorcycle, there are still road rules to follow, including drunk driving, the appropriate driving age, driving with a license, and of course wearing helmets at all times. Wearing a helmet is mandatory for drivers and passengers of motorcycles.
• The speed limit on major highways in The Gambia is 70 km/h (43 mph), 50 km/h (31 mph) in developed areas and 25 km/h (15 mph) in residential areas, including school zones and roads near hospitals
