Entrance to the Principality of Liechtenstein

The same rules apply to entering the Principality of Liechtenstein as for Switzerland.

Liechtenstein is a member state of the Schengen area, but does not belong to the EU member states.

Liechtenstein does not issue its own visas. Since there are no border controls between Liechtenstein and Switzerland, without exception, the same visa requirements apply for travelers to Liechtenstein as for travelers to Switzerland.

What are the requirements for a tourist visa to Liechtenstein?

To obtain a tourist visa to Liechtenstein, you will need documents which are confirmed that you are actually traveling there for tourist purposes:

• Completed and signed application form for a tourist/guest visa to Switzerland.

• Two photos with the size of the passport that meet the photo requirements for a Schengen visa.

• Your valid passport. Together with photocopies of current and previous passports/other travel documents.

• Travel health insurance that covers the entire duration of your stay.

• A cover letter that proves that the reason for your trip to Liechtenstein is tourism or a short-term visit.

• Certificate of civil status.

• Confirmation of the availability of sufficient financial resources. You must provide at least 100 Swiss francs or 92.34 euros per day for each day spent in Liechtenstein.

• Confirmation of the paid fee for issuing a tourist/guest visa.

• Proof of residence. When traveling to Switzerland for tourist purposes, you must provide proof of where you will be staying at this time. It can be:

o hotel booking that contains the full name, address, phone number and email address of your hotel.

o rental agreement, if you rent a house for the duration of your stay.

• Documents which are confirmed the trip for tourist purposes.

o you must provide copies of your itinerary, which will include the dates and places of your stay, flight numbers, and times of your entry and exit.

o if you are traveling with a travel agency, you must show your reservation to the travel agency. You may also need to provide an email from the tour organizer.

• Letter from the employer. If you are employed, you must provide a letter from your employer stating your job description, your position in the company, and the time of your return to work.

On the other hand, if you are visiting family or friends, you should provide:

•Invitation letter from the host.

oThe person who you are going to visit should write an invitation letter. This person will be your sponsor. The letter is proof that you have been invited to stay with them and that you will not be staying in Liechtenstein illegally.

othe email should indicate the dates when you will stay with them, as well as describe your relationship in detail. It should also indicate that if you are unable to provide for yourself financially, your family member/friend will cover for you.

oyour host must attach a copy of their passport along with the invitation.

•Confirmation of kinship relations. If the person you are going to visit is a member of your family, you must include proof of this in your application. This can be done with a marriage or birth certificate.

•Proof of residence.

oif you live with a family member/friend during your stay in Switzerland, your sponsor (family member/friend) must indicate this in the invitation letter.

oif you do not live with your sponsor, you may be asked to prove that you are actually going to visit them in a different way.

•Confirmation that your sponsor can cover you financially (if any).

oif your sponsor will cover you financially, they may need to provide proof of this. They may need to do this by providing a copy of their employment contract (valid for at least 12 months) and the last three payslips.

oif they don’t cover you financially, you must provide proof of your own income and sufficient funds.

Keep in mind that the authorities reserve the right to request any other documents that they deem necessary.

Procedure for issuing a tourist and guest visa

The procedure for applying for a visa to Switzerland is as follows:

1.Make an appointment at the Swiss Embassy/Consulate in your country.

2.Download and fill out the application form for a tourist visa to Switzerland.

3.Collect all the necessary documents for a Swiss tourist visa.

4.Apply in person at the relevant Swiss Embassy/Consulate.

5.Complete a visa interview.

6.Pay the tourist visa fee.

7.Wait for your tourist visa to be issued.

If your application is accepted, you will receive a visa sticker on your passport indicating the validity period of the visa. After that, you get permission to travel to Liechtenstein.

If your application is rejected, your rejection letter will contain the reasons. It also tells you whether you have the right to appeal the decision and how to do so.

How long is a tourist visa valid?

A Swiss tourist visa, like other types of Schengen visas, is valid for a maximum of 90 days for six months.

If you have received a multiple-entry tourist Schengen visa, you can enter and leave the Schengen area as many times as you want within six months, as long as the total number of days doesn’t exceed 90.

You also don't need to spend all valid days in Liechtenstein. A Schengen visa allows you to travel between all countries of the Schengen Agreement.

How Much Does a Schengen Visa Cost?

• €90.00 – for adults

• €45.00 – for children between 6-12 years of age

• €35.00 – for nationals from Armenia, Azerbaijan and Belarus

• €67.50 – for nationals from Cabo Verde

Schengen Visa is free for children younger than six years of age.

Health insurance

A travel insurance plan for obtaining a Schengen visa must meet the following requirements:

•It must cover at least 30,000 euros for medical expenses and emergency evacuation.

•It should be valid in all 26 countries of the Schengen area.

•It must be valid for the entire period of your stay in Europe.

Make sure that your plan covers:

•Cost of treatment. This includes:

oInpatient and outpatient treatment.

odoctor's visit.

oHospitalization.

osurgery.

oPrescription medications.

oemergency dental care.

•Cost of repatriation or evacuation. If you are seriously ill or have a serious accident that requires medical attention in your country, travel insurance covers the cost of repatriation. It also covers repatriation in the event of death.

Transit through Liechtenstein isn’t provided.

The country is in a customs union with Switzerland and uses the Swiss franc as its national currency.

To get a higher education, residents have to study in Switzerland, because there are no universities in Liechtenstein.

For 70 thousand dollars, you can become a full-fledged ruler of the state per day: publish your own laws, enter your own currency, rename localities, and organize holidays. In short, you can do whatever your heart desires for your money. But after exactly 24 hours, the document granting the right to rent the country automatically stops and you become an ordinary tourist.

Telephone, Telegraph and postal services are provided by Switzerland. An 18.5 km long railway belonging to Austria passes through the country and connects the cities of Feldkirch in Austria and Bux in Switzerland. The length of highways reaches 250 km.

Liechtenstein does not have its own airports and uses the services of neighboring countries.

The nearest airports are in the Swiss cities of Zurich (110 km) and St. Gallen (70 km), as well as in Germany: Friedrichshafen (90 km) and Memmingen (125 km).

What is allowed to import (for tourists from non-EU countries):

•personal items (clothing, photo and video cameras, sports equipment, musical instruments);

•food products based on 1 day;

•wine - up to 2 liters;

•strong alcoholic beverages (but not more than 15°) -1 liter;

•100 cigarettes, 25 cigars, 125 g of tobacco (tobacco and tobacco products are allowed to be imported only by persons over the age of 17);

•gifts up to €200.

What is allowed to import (for tourists from EU countries):

•personal items (clothing, photo and video cameras, sports equipment, musical instruments);

•food products based on 1 day;

•wine - up to 2 liters;

•strong alcoholic beverages (but not more than 15°) -1 L;

•200 cigarettes, 50 cigars, 250 g of tobacco (tobacco and tobacco products are allowed to be imported only by persons over the age of 17);

•● gifts up to €200.

What is prohibited to import:

•drugs;

•meat and meat products;

•skins of wild animals (cat, crocodile, lizard families) and products made from them;

•flowering plants with soil.

To fly with a dog or cat, you will need the following documents:

• A valid veterinary certificate (owner's details, animal description, identification and vaccination data are indicated).

• Current rabies vaccine. If the rabies vaccination was an animal's first vaccine, it must wait 21 days before entering the country. There is no time delay for booster injections; provided that there is evidence that revaccination was administered before the last vaccine expired.

• Tattoo or microchip.

• The animal must be older than three months.

EU driver's license holders have the option to voluntarily convert their driver's licenses to local ones, given that they have lived in their country of origin for at least two (2) years.

If you aren’t from the EU, you must obtain an international driver's license. Keep in mind that an international driver's license serves as a transfer of a driver's license from your country and you will also need it when you need to convert your non-EU driver's license after 12 months of moving to Liechtenstein.

Liechtenstein car rental

Renting a car is easy. However, all these different insurance policies and conditions can be quite confusing. That's why planning ahead can make a difference. If you just showed up at a random car rental, you may not know if you're getting a good deal. Plan so that you can calculate the total cost, including additional costs. After booking your car online and completing your booking, you will receive a confirmation voucher by email.

Upon receipt of the car, you must provide the following documents: a confirmation voucher, a driver's license, an international driver's license, and a valid credit card.

Age requirements

You must be 21 years old to rent a car yourself. For drivers under the age of 25, there is also a surcharge for young drivers. Moreover, when renting a car, some companies require you to have a driver's license issued to you for at least a year.
