Visas for work in Saudi Arabia
Moving to Saudi Arabia for work requires obtaining the appropriate visas and permits. Main types of visas:
- Work visa – also known as Iqama, is required for all foreign workers in Saudi Arabia. It serves as a residence permit and must be financed by your employer. To get it, your employer must apply and provide supporting documents, including a copy of your passport, job offer letter, medical certificate, etc. The process can take several weeks.
- Dependent visa – foreign workers can finance visas for their spouses and children under 18 years of age. Dependents are also issued with an Iqama residence permit. Among the required documents are a marriage and birth certificate.
- Visit visa - allows you to stay temporarily in Saudi Arabia for up to 90 days for business, tourism or job search. This does not allow employment. An invitation letter from a company or individual sponsor in Saudi Arabia is required.
Work for women in Saudi Arabia
It is possible to get a job for women in Saudi Arabia only in a very limited number of industries. The most accessible areas for employment are education and medicine, because women must visit doctors and study separately from men, and this requires the presence of female specialists in these fields.
Foreign female workers can still find a place in an oil-producing enterprise, but only as female engineers and only in Saudi Aramco, which is the only company that employs women. Also, for several years women have been allowed to work as storekeepers and cashiers in supermarkets.
On the one hand, Saudi Arabia offers very good tax-free salaries and comprehensive benefits packages. However, for some, restrictions on women's rights, social freedoms and access to alcohol can be difficult.
We will remind you! Saudi Arabia is opening its doors to qualified expats and simplifying the visa process. About changes in the country's migration legislation in 2024 and new employment rules in this article.
