Comoros is a state located in the Eastern part of Africa. The volcanic archipelago, which includes four main islands: Ngazidzha, Ndzuani, Mwali, and the island of Mayotte, which actually has the status of a region of France, is officially called the Union of the Comoros.

Comoros is one of the poorest countries in the world. GDP per capita, according to statistics for 2018-2019, is $788. 60% of the population is below the poverty line. Lack of skilled labour, large population growth, and considerable dependence on foreign aid, this is how the state lives.

Due to the dependence on foreign aid, and the lack of qualified workers in various fields, the state is suitable for employment abroad, or a place for your own business.

Labour market

The state cannot provide itself with sufficient food, a key food product, as well as rice remains the main share of imports in the Comoros to this day. In addition to rice, agriculture (40% of GDP) brings vanilla, cloves, cananga, copra, coconuts, bananas, cassava (tapioca), and fishing. Industry (4% of GDP) is focused on perfumery and the processing of agricultural raw materials, as well as the service sector (56% of GDP). The state is dependent on the export of its food.

The government of the state strengthens work to improve the level of labour qualifications and literacy, seeks to privatize commercial and industrial enterprises, improve business and develop tourism.

In most organizations, the working day from Monday to Thursday lasts from 7:30 to 14:30, on Fridays from 7:30 to 11:30, Saturday from 7:30 to 12:00. Business is conducted mainly in French or Arabic, English is used in rare cases.

Job Opportunities

Employment in the Comoros extends to various vacancies, however, they are few in number and good experience in any of the available fields is required. Of the key ones:

  • Trading and marketing;
  • IT sphere;
  • Health and Welfare;
  • Manufacturing and construction;
  • Agriculture, and the service sector.

Finding a job on the islands is a difficult task for the locals, the constant population growth and small labor market remains a major problem for the government. For foreigners, the most suitable option to look for work on the islands is through international employment sites and job searches. Finding a job already after being in the state is a problem, but not a big one.
