The Educational Testing Service (ETS) has announced changes to the TOEFL English test procedure. In particular, the duration of the exam will be significantly shortened, and the changes will affect the system of registration and obtaining results. The updates will take effect on July 26, 2023.

Shortening the duration of the TOEFL exam

ETS has announced that they plan to reduce the duration of the TOEFL exam to 1 hour and 56 minutes. Previously, the duration of the exam was about 3 hours.

To reduce time, they plan to introduce certain changes:

- Simplify the instructions and navigation system in the tests.

- A new section called "Writing for an Academic Discussion" will be introduced in the test form. It will replace the previous Writing TOEFL section.

- The TOEFL Reading section will be shortened. The revised section is expected to have 20 questions that will take around 35 minutes to answer.

- There will be 28 questions in the updated Listening section of the TOEFL. The duration of the task is about 36 minutes.

- All questions that fall under the category of "questions with no points" will be deleted.

Other changes in TOEFL

One of the most significant changes will be that from now on, TOEFL participants will be able to see the official release date of the test results immediately after the exam is completed. After that, they will also receive real-time notifications if any changes are made to the points section.

ETS also announced the simplification of the exam registration procedure. The corresponding changes will come into force already at the beginning of July. TOEFL test takers will be able to create an account on the official website, select a date, etc., faster than usual.

In addition, they plan to increase the number of local exam payment options, TOEFL participants will be able to pay with local credit and debit cards, digital wallets, and online banking.

Those participants who have already registered for the TOEFL iBT will be able to change test dates for free until April 30, 2023 through their TOEFL account. In addition, an updated version of the TOEFL iBT practice tests, both paid and free, will be available on the official website in the coming weeks.
