The best cities in Turkey for digital nomads to live in in 2024

Turkey offers a wide range of places for digital nomads depending on their lifestyle preferences. You can find everything from bustling cities steeped in culture and history to tranquil seaside enclaves. A Turkish website for nomads, run by the country's national tourism agency, provides information on several popular destinations, including Dalaman, Marmaris, Antalya, and Fethiye, small towns along the Turkish Riviera, located across the Aegean Sea from Greece and Cyprus.

Many expats choose to live and work in Istanbul, one of the largest and most symbolic cities in Turkey. Home to a number of UNESCO World Heritage sites, it has an exciting nightlife, world-class restaurants and street food, and unique natural scenery, including the shores of the Bosphorus. Due to its size, remote workers find many options for accommodation and workspace in the city.

Istanbul offers a variety of places to work for digital nomads, including shared offices, co-working spaces, and coffee shops with free Wi-Fi. The city is also famous for its cultural heritage, which attracts many creative professionals and digital nomads. For those looking for diversity and new experiences, Turkey is the perfect place to stay and work in a cozy and thoughtful environment.

Features of the life of digital nomads in Turkey 2024

In Turkey, taking into account the current exchange rate, the cost of living for foreigners is significantly lower than in large cities in the United States or Europe. According to Global Citizen Solutions, the average monthly cost per person in Istanbul is about $542, excluding rent. In smaller cities such as Izmir, the average cost of living drops to $435 without rent per person. Prices for everyday purchases such as eating out, taking public transportation, or going to the cinema are also more affordable.

However, it is worth noting that the economic situation in Turkey is currently unstable, and the inflation rate in the country has risen to almost 70%, which leads to financial difficulties for many Turkish citizens. This is important information for potential digital nomads, who should be sensitive to this before arriving in the country, for example, preferring to spend money in local businesses.

In Turkey, a significant portion of the monthly budget is likely to be spent on rent. Rent is one of the most prominent expenses, but prices remain low. For example, you can expect to pay $331 per month for a modest three-bedroom apartment on the Aegean and Mediterranean coast. If you choose to live in Istanbul, this price will more than double, especially in more affluent neighborhoods.

Expats should not worry too much about the language barrier in Turkey, as English is widely spoken in most major tourist centers. In cities such as Istanbul, Izmir, and Cappadocia, it is especially common to find sellers in hotels, restaurants, and shops who speak English and other languages. At the same time, however, many people in Turkey do not speak English, such as taxi drivers. This situation can be solved by using apps such as BiTaksi and Uber to get around.
