Traveling around Europe in an electric vehicle is becoming easier and easier, but charging costs and infrastructure availability still vary significantly from country to country. According to Euronews, citing a study by EVBoosters, there are currently more than 1.3 million public charging stations in Europe, and in just the first four months of 2026, their number increased by approximately 6%. However, the most developed infrastructure doesn’t always mean the cheapest charging, and countries with the lowest rates may lag behind in the number of fast-charging stations.

In this article, we’ll explain where it’s cheapest to fully charge an electric vehicle, which countries are leading the way in charging network development, and what drivers should keep in mind when planning a trip through Europe.

Are you planning a trip to Europe by car?

In many countries, highways are tolled and require an electronic road vignette. This is a digital permit that confirms payment for the use of toll roads and is checked automatically by the license plate number - without stickers and paper receipts. Making a vignette online before you travel will help you avoid fines, travel delays, and unpleasant situations during inspections.

In which European countries is it cheapest to charge an electric vehicle?

The cost of charging an electric vehicle in Europe can vary by more than a factor of 13 depending on the country. An analysis by Compare the Market compares the cost of a full charge for a Tesla Model Y RWD and shows that the difference between the most expensive and cheapest countries is in the tens of euros.

The most expensive place to fully charge an electric vehicle today is in Ireland—33.90 euros. The top five most expensive countries also include Italy (€32.30), Liechtenstein (€31.38), Germany (€30.77), and Belgium (€30.61). In the United Kingdom, a full charge costs 30.39 euros, and in Switzerland, 27.63 euros.

Prices are significantly lower in Central and Eastern European countries. For example, in Poland, you can fully charge an electric vehicle for 12.82 euros; in Spain, for 12.65 euros; in Luxembourg, for 12.59 euros; and in Portugal, for 11.44 euros.

The most affordable charging is available in countries outside the EU. The clear leader is Turkey, where a full charge for a Tesla Model Y RWD costs just 2.65 euros. Next are Ukraine (3.51 euros), Belarus (4.03 euros), Hungary (5.69 euros), Norway (5.81 euros), Armenia (5.98 euros), and Serbia (6.44 euros).

Where in Europe is the charging station network best developed?

Charging cost is just one of the criteria for electric vehicle owners. Equally important is how easy it is to find an available charging station while traveling. According to EVBoosters, there are already over 1.3 million public charging stations operating in Europe today, and from January through April 2026 alone, their number grew by approximately 6%. However, the level of infrastructure development still varies significantly between countries.

When assessing the availability of the charging network by the number of stations per 1,000 residents, the undisputed leader is the Netherlands, with 12.26 charging stations per 1,000 residents. The top five also include Belgium (9.39), Denmark (8.87), Norway (7.32), and Luxembourg (6.89). Sweden (6.21), Austria (3.90), Finland (3.68), France (2.79), and Germany (2.53) also show high figures.

At the same time, in many countries in Southern and Central Europe, the density of the charging infrastructure is significantly lower. For example, Spain has 1.04 charging stations per 1,000 residents, Greece has 0.91, Ireland has 0.73, the Czech Republic has 0.70, and Poland has only 0.42—one of the lowest figures among the countries included in the study.

Experts note that what matters to drivers is not only the total number of charging points but also the proportion of fast DC stations, which allow drivers to recharge their vehicles in 20–40 minutes instead of several hours. That is why countries with a dense network of modern fast-charging stations remain the most convenient for long-distance road trips and international routes.

Which countries are best suited for traveling by electric vehicle?

When planning a route, it’s important to consider not only the cost of charging but also the availability of infrastructure. Low rates don’t always mean a comfortable trip, as the network of charging stations remains underdeveloped in some countries. At the same time, countries with a large number of charging stations may have some of the highest electricity prices for electric vehicles.

The most well-balanced destinations for travel today are the Netherlands, Denmark, Belgium, and Norway. These countries have one of the densest networks of public charging stations in Europe, which greatly simplifies travel even over long distances. Although the cost of a full charge here is higher than in many countries in Central and Eastern Europe, drivers benefit from a well-developed infrastructure, minimal wait times, and high availability of fast chargers.

We previously reported that Europe is introducing mandatory driver surveillance cameras.

If cost savings are your main priority, consider Turkey, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Moldova, Serbia, and Armenia, where a full charge for an electric vehicle costs several times less than in Western Europe. However, before traveling to these countries, it is recommended to check the route and the locations of charging stations in advance, as their density may be lower.

Experts also recommend checking the compatibility of charging networks, payment terms, and the availability of operators’ mobile apps before an international trip. In many European countries, different networks operate under their own rates and use separate authorization systems, so advance preparation will help avoid unnecessary expenses and delays on the road.

Overall, the study shows that Europe’s infrastructure for electric vehicles continues to develop rapidly. Every year, drivers gain more opportunities for comfortable international travel; however, the differences between countries in terms of charging costs and station availability remain quite significant. That is why it is important to consider both factors when planning a route to ensure that the trip is not only comfortable but also cost-effective.

Are you traveling abroad with your own car or a rented car?

Before traveling, it is important to check whether a road vignette is required for toll roads in the countries of your route. Failure to have a valid vignette can result in fines and automatic camera recordings of violations. Getting an electronic vignette from Visit World is an easy way to travel more relaxed, without unnecessary expenses and surprises on the road!
