Currently, there are no commercial flights from Tuvalu, and the borders are closed to foreigners/residents. Foreign citizens are allowed to enter with prior permission from the government.
According to Tuvalu's immigration policy, citizens of all countries except the Schengen area and Taiwan must have a visa to visit Tuvalu. Visas are issued on arrival and are issued for a maximum stay of 1 month. All visitors must have a passport valid for 6 months.
Visa-free access
Citizens of the Schengen area and Taiwan member states can visit Tuvalu without visa restrictions. They must provide a passport with a validity period of at least six months and a blank page, as well as pay a fee of 100 Australian dollars. Citizens of the Schengen area are granted visa-free travel for a maximum stay of 90 days for any 180-day period, while Taiwanese citizens are granted visa-free entry for 90 days.
Visa on arrival
Tuvalu authorities issue visas and permits only on arrival. Citizens who don’t have passports of any of the Schengen countries will be able to obtain a tourist visa on arrival.
Each foreigner who require a visa upon arrival in Tuvalu must have a passport valid for six months, have a blank page that must be stamped, a ticket to leave the island, proof of sufficient funds, and pay a fee of 100 Australian dollars. Not allowed having this type of visa, engage in business activities, employment or study in an educational institution.
There are more than 30 nationalities that are exempt from paying the fee of 100 Australian dollars. These travelers only need to present a valid passport along with their air ticket to enter the country: Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Belize, Cayman Islands, Cook Islands, Fiji, Gambia, Gibraltar, Grenada, Hong Kong, Jamaica, Kenya, Kiribati, Lesotho, Malawi, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritius, Montserrat, Nauru, Niue, Samoa, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, South Korea, Tanzania, Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda, United Kingdom, Vanuatu, Zambia
Although it is not required by law to have travel health insurance before visiting Tuvalu, it is advisable to get it before traveling. The minimum amount covered by the insurance policy is 50 000,00 USD.
For visiting Tuvalu, there are no special conditions for transit crossing the border.
According to the provisions of the animal import regulations to Tuvalu, dogs and cats can be imported to Tuvalu from the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Fiji, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia, and sheep, goats and pigs can be imported from any of these countries except the United Kingdom. Each animal must be accompanied by
a document which is confirmed the absence of ailments and contact with any animal that has had the disease in the last 6 months. You must have a certificate from an officially licensed veterinarian indicating that he examined the animal 7 days before sending it to Tuvalu.
Import of national and foreign currency isn’t restricted, and declaration is mandatory. Duty-free import of up to 200 cigarettes or 225 grams of tobacco or cigars is allowed (for all visitors regardless of age), as well as up to 1 liter of spirits or up to 1 liter of wine (for visitors aged 18 years and older).
The following products are not subject to duty, but must be declared: 1 binoculars, 1 camera and 6 film coils, 1 movie camera and 200 m of film, 1 radio receiver, 1 portable tape recorder, 1 typewriter and a reasonable amount of sports equipment.
Import of food, pornographic products, pure alcohol, drugs, weapons and ammunition is prohibited. Fruits, vegetables, materials of animal origin, wood products, plants and seeds are subject to mandatory inspection. Export of samples of plants and animals under state protection, as well as products made of leather, bone, bird feathers, shells and corals is prohibited.
To drive a car in Tuvalu legally, you must have your country's driver's license and an international driver's license (IDP) for Tuvalu. An international driver's license is especially necessary if your native driver's license is not printed in English or written in Latin letters. You can use your driver's license and IDP in the country for 14 days. If you have been in the country for more than 14 days, you will need to obtain a local driver's license.
Minimum driving age: 16 years if the vehicle covered by the license is a motorcycle; 17 years if the vehicle covered by the license is a private vehicle; 21 years if the vehicle covered by the license is a commercial or public vehicle.
Tuvalu has left-hand traffic. Drive on roads at speeds below the maximum speed of 60 km/h. The maximum allowable blood alcohol concentration in the country is 0.08%.
Car rental
Among the vehicles that foreigners can rent in Tuvalu, there are only motorcycles. The roads to Tuvalu are very narrow. Since most rental cars are motorcycles, the minimum age for renting is not so high. Locals and foreigners over the age of 18 can already rent a motorcycle if they have a valid driver's license and an international driver's license (IDP).
