According to the immigration policy of Antigua and Barbuda, foreigners (except nationals of OECS countries (Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada, Dominica, Montserrat, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia) who have been granted permanent status) must apply for an appropriate visa at the embassy if they plan to work or do business in the country.
In these cases, they will need to apply for an Antigua and Barbuda residence permit, work visa or business visa, respectively.
A Work Visa to Antigua and Barbuda is a permit to stay in the country for the duration of the contract.
This visa is issued to persons traveling to the country for the purpose of earning an income. In order to be issued it, you should prepare the following documents:
- International passport (must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of departure from Antigua and Barbuda);
- Questionnaire (filled in);
- Color passport photo (45 mm x 35 mm);
- Copy and original of work permit documents;
- A letter from the employer about an invitation to work;
- Certificate of criminal record;
- Temporary residence permit (you will receive it automatically after employment);
- Information about the applicant's vacancy, income, and available savings.
Peculiarities of foreigners' employment
The government cares more about unemployed local residents, so priority is given to them first. If a local resident is not suitable for the position, the employer must prove that it is necessary to hire someone from abroad and make sure that a local person has been offered the job. Therefore, only highly qualified jobs are offered to foreigners, which require special training courses or diplomas.
You may want to consider setting up a business in Antigua and Barbuda as the government has greatly simplified the process of doing business, whether you are a small startup or a large company. The country welcomes foreign investment. This is because, according to the Antigua and Barbuda Investment Authority (ABIA), the Small Business Development Act allows for a 75% reduction in property taxes and exempts businesses from income tax for up to five years.
You can start your own business by submitting the following:
- An offer with a business description
- A statement of tax incentives that accompanies the offer
- Work permits for everyone who works for the company
- License for ownership of land of a foreigner
- An application for a lease or rent for a building used for business
You can help rebuild small farms on islands after hurricanes. It does not require special skills, and the hosts will be happy to receive you.
If you love animals, you can work in animal shelters. There are many donkeys in the region. They are widespread among the poorer classes and farmers. That is why there are many organizations scattered throughout the country that help animals in need. Also, you don't need to be a veterinarian to work at an animal shelter.
Multiple-entry visas are only granted to applicants who provide proof of multiple entries to Antigua and Barbuda:
- Proof of residence during your stay. For those traveling for work or business, provide a letter from your employer stating the purpose of your travel.
- Confirmation of the availability of funds to finance the trip, i.e. bank statements for the previous two months.
- A criminal record certificate may be required upon request by the visa issuing office.
Please contact the High Commission of Antigua and Barbuda for any additional information regarding visa and entry requirements.
