The government conducts a fairly strict selection of applicants, but is happy to accept businessmen, scientific and cultural figures, athletes, highly qualified specialists who can bring economic or cultural benefit to the country.

Australia's professional immigration program allows people who are of interest to Australia as professionals in their field to immigrate.
If you have a higher or secondary special education, and your specialty is in the list of in-demand occupations of Australia (SOL), then you and your family can apply for the status of a permanent resident of Australia. Your spouse (husband) and unmarried children up to the age of 18 can immigrate with you.
Immigration to Australia by professional category, visas:
- Skilled Independent Visa (subclass 189). Allows the applicant and his family members to obtain a permanent visa to live and work for an unlimited time in any city or state in Australia, study, use the Medicare health insurance system, and become an Australian citizen.
- Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190). The main requirement for submitting an application for a 190 Skilled – Sponsored Visa is to receive sponsorship from the state of Australia, for which you will be awarded an additional 5 points. Allows the applicant to obtain a permanent resident visa and live in any city of the state that acted as your immigration sponsor. After living in this state for 2 years, you can then live in any city or state in Australia.
- Skilled - Nominated or Sponsored Visa (Subclass 489). The 489 visa allows the applicant to obtain a temporary (for 4 years) Australian visa. After living in regional Australia for at least 2 years and having worked for 1 year (full-time) in your (confirmed) profession, you are eligible to apply for an 887 (permanent visa) while in Australia. When applying for an 887 visa, you may not provide evidence of sponsorship from Australian relatives or State and Territory governments.
The main requirement for applying for a Nominated or Sponsored Visa (Subclass 489) is to be sponsored by an Australian state/territory or sponsored by a relative who is an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen.
Immigration to Australia by category Business:
- age: up to 55 years, but there may be exceptions
- more than 4 years of experience in business or enterprise management, or investment capital management.
- confirmation of cash, family assets from AU$400,000 and above (depending on the type of visa)

Types of spousal visas/marriage visas/fiancée visas:
Visa for a bride (groom) planning to marry an Australian citizen (for opposite-sex and same-sex partners):
300 bride (groom) visa / Prospective Marriage Visa (subclass 300) Temporary visa for 9 months. During this time, you must enter Australia and register your marriage, otherwise you will have to leave the country.
Spouse visas for people who are already married or civilly married to an Australian citizen (for opposite-sex and same-sex partners):
820 visa/ Partner temporary visa (subclass 820)
Temporary visa, until you are issued an 801 visa/Partner permanent visa (subclass 801). Permanent visa. For those who have lived on an 820 visa together with their partner in Australia for 2 years or more.
309 visa/Partner temporary visa (subclass 309)
Temporary visa for 2 years. For those who are already married before applying to DIBP or have lived with their partner for more than 12 months in a common-law marriage outside Australia.
100 visa/Partner permanent visa (subclass 100)
Permanent visa. For those who have lived on a 309 visa together with their partner in Australia for more than 2 years.
Immigration to Australia is possible and the following categories of applicants have the greatest chances of obtaining Australian citizenship:
- Qualified specialists in various fields;
- Businessmen who can prove the profitability of their business;
- Prominent persons: researchers, artists, musicians, painters, athletes, etc.;
- Applicants who have direct relatives who are Australian citizens.
- In addition to the listed aspects, immigration to Australia is also possible for those who are in refugee status. However, the government closely monitors this category of migrants and thoroughly checks them, so it is quite difficult to get such a status with the subsequent receipt of humanitarian aid and Australian citizenship.
A foreigner can apply for Australian citizenship after 4 years of legal residence in the country, the last 12 months as a permanent resident. Applicants for citizenship must pass an interview and pass a test. Before becoming a citizen, a future citizen must take an oath of allegiance to the state.
Australian citizenship test
The Australian Citizenship Test is designed to assess your knowledge of Australia and its history, as well as the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship. The citizenship test is also designed to assess knowledge of everyday English. English is the national language. Knowledge of the English language will help you take full advantage of education, employment and other opportunities that Australia provides. The test for obtaining Australian citizenship is computerized, built on the principle of multiple choice and given in English. To pass the test, it is enough to answer 75 percent correctly. Citizenship tests are conducted at offices of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship. Tests are also conducted at various locations throughout Australia and at designated overseas missions.
Dual citizenship is allowed in Australia.
According to the law, a person can obtain Australian citizenship in four ways:
- By birth on Australian territory (by birth);
- In the process of adoption by Australian citizens (by adoption);
- By descent;
- By conferral.
An Australian citizen has a number of advantages over a "Permanent Resident of Australia", namely the right to:
- Live in Australia;
- Register as an Australian Citizen "by descent" any child of yours who was born both in the territory of Australia and outside the territory of Australia from the moment the father obtained this status.
- Obtain an Australian passport and cross the Australian border any number of times without the need to apply for a Resident Return Visa;
- Visa-free short-term stay in most countries of the world;
- Use the assistance of Australian diplomatic missions outside the territory of Australia;
- Participate in the election of members of Australian Governments at any level;
- To be elected to the Parliament and other authorities of Australia;
- The right to obtain employment at the State level, which requires the presence of Australian citizenship as a mandatory condition;
- To serve in the Australian Armed Forces.
Australian citizens also have the duty to:
- Accept and obey Australian Laws;
- Participate in elections and vote in them;
- In the event of hostilities, to defend Australia as part of conscription;
- If necessary, participate as a juror in the Court.
- Any person who has obtained the status of an Australian citizen has exactly the same rights and responsibilities as Australians born in Australia to Australian parents who obtained this status automatically.
There are no special conditions for entry and assistance to temporarily displaced citizens of Ukraine who leave the country due to the war. However, all visa applications of Ukrainian citizens are considered expeditiously.
Information for Ukrainian citizens who accepted the offer of temporary humanitarian stay until 31 July 2022
Australia granted special humanitarian visas to Ukrainian refugees until 31 July 2022: Humanitarian Stay (Temporary) (subclass 449) visa, Temporary (Humanitarian Concern) (subclass 786) visa, which allow staying in the country for up to three years. With this document Ukrainians can study, work and receive medical services in Australia.

At the moment, the offer for issuing visas for temporary humanitarian stay in Australia has expired. Only 40,000 such visas were allocated for Ukrainians until 31 July 2022.
Citizens of Ukraine are currently unable to accept this offer.
Priority in obtaining a visa was given to those who have relatives or friends in the country. For Ukrainian citizens who are already in Australia, but their visas have expired, their residence permit is automatically extended for six months.
🔻How to apply for a temporary humanitarian visa?
To obtain a humanitarian visa, you must first obtain a tourist visa "600". This can be done in Ukraine or in the EU countries - everything happens online.
Upon arrival in Australia, Ukrainian citizens must submit an online visa application to the Australian Government Department of Home Affairs on its website.
Applications for visas from Ukrainian citizens (especially those with links to Australia) are considered by the Australian Government Department of Home Affairs on a priority basis.
To apply for a visa via the web form, a valid passport of a citizen of Ukraine (children can be entered in the passport of one of the parents), other identification, as well as an internal passport of a citizen of Ukraine (ID card) to confirm the identity of the applicant must be provided.
If a citizen of Ukraine does not have a valid passport or ID card, information about the efforts made to obtain these documents (emails, correspondence with Ukrainian authorities, etc.), as well as any other identification documents should be provided.
The Department of Home Affairs of the Australian Government provides a variety of services (advice by migration agents, translation of documents, interpretation, etc.)
🔻Do Ukrainian citizens have to undergo a medical examination to obtain a visa?
As a general rule, there is no such need.
However, at the request of the migration officer, visa applicants must undergo an immigration medical examination by a registered doctor. A list of such doctors is available on the website of the Australian Government Department of Home Affairs.
