2024 Hurricane Season: What Travelers Need to Know Before Planning a Trip
Hurricane season is in full swing in the summer, so tourists should take this into account when planning their trip. Find out what experts have to say about the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season and how to travel in these conditions
Summer is a period of holidays, vacations and relaxation. However, in addition, it is in the summer that the hurricane season unfolds as actively as possible. Bad weather can not only spoil your travel experience, but also lead to delayed or canceled flights, changes in plans, etc.
What will the 2024 hurricane season be like? Scientists have already given their predictions, so we are telling you.
Hurricane season 2024 - predictions of scientists
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Center have predicted that the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season will be "above normal."
Experts say that there is an 85% chance that this year's activity will be above normal, a normal season is only 10% likely, and a below-normal figure is predicted to be only 5%.
How many and what kind of storms can we expect in 2024?
Between June 1 and November 30, 2024, NOAA predicts 17 to 25 storms with winds of 62 km/h or higher. Of these, 8 to 14 storms will develop into hurricanes with wind speeds above 120 km/h. Potentially major hurricanes will be 4-7 storms (category 3, 4 or 5 with winds of 178 km/h or higher). Forecasters are 70% confident in their forecasts.
Also, according to the latest long-range hurricane forecast published by Mexico's national meteorological agency, up to 37 tropical storms or hurricanes could occur in the Mexican Caribbean this year.
Planning a trip or move abroad? An important part of a successful trip is an insurance policy, as it guarantees high-quality medical care anywhere in the world and can protect you from unnecessary expenses while travelling. You can buy insurance from trusted agents on the Visit World portal.
Why will the hurricane season become more active in 2024?
The expected above-normal activity is due to several factors, including near-record warm ocean temperatures in the Atlantic, the development of La Niña conditions in the Pacific, reduced Atlantic trade winds, and reduced wind shear that favors the formation of tropical storms.
What will the storms be called in 2024?
In addition to forecasts, NOAA also released the expected storm names for 2024: Alberto, Beryl, Chris, Debbie, Ernesto, Francine, Gordon, Helen, Isaac, Joyce, Kirk, Leslie, Milton, Nadine, Oscar, Patti, Rafael, Sarah, Tony , Valery and William.
How to plan a trip during hurricane season?
- Time to travel
The peak hurricane season usually runs from August to October.
- Resort search
Before traveling, travelers are encouraged to review the resort's hurricane safety protocols and ensure they are aware of all important safety precautions.
Resorts are generally required to prepare annual evacuation plans as well as other weather-related safety protocols should conditions deteriorate.
The main means of protecting guests from hurricanes at resorts are the presence of a reliable warning system, the creation of special shelters and evacuation.
- Flight risks
Travelers planning vacations in 2024 to hurricane-prone areas (such as Florida in the US, the Caribbean, etc.) should carefully monitor airline announcements or leave their email address to be notified when booking tickets.
Airlines usually warn their passengers about flight delays or cancellations. United Airlines, for example, has an “Notifications” page that provides guidance on flight interruptions, possible ticket cancellations, and refunds.
- On vacation
It is important to check the weather forecast regularly before going to the beach or other places where you are most likely to experience the effects of bad weather.
Another important tip for travelers is to purchase comprehensive travel insurance when planning your summer vacation, which will cover expenses in the event of a trip being postponed or canceled and will help you get quality and free medical care in an emergency.
