Between June 1 and November 30, 2024, NOAA predicts 17 to 25 storms with winds of 62 km/h or higher. Of these, 8 to 14 storms will develop into hurricanes with wind speeds above 120 km/h. Potentially major hurricanes will be 4-7 storms (category 3, 4 or 5 with winds of 178 km/h or higher). Forecasters are 70% confident in their forecasts.

Also, according to the latest long-range hurricane forecast published by Mexico's national meteorological agency, up to 37 tropical storms or hurricanes could occur in the Mexican Caribbean this year.

Why will the hurricane season become more active in 2024?

The expected above-normal activity is due to several factors, including near-record warm ocean temperatures in the Atlantic, the development of La Niña conditions in the Pacific, reduced Atlantic trade winds, and reduced wind shear that favors the formation of tropical storms.

In addition to forecasts, NOAA also released the expected storm names for 2024: Alberto, Beryl, Chris, Debbie, Ernesto, Francine, Gordon, Helen, Isaac, Joyce, Kirk, Leslie, Milton, Nadine, Oscar, Patti, Rafael, Sarah, Tony , Valery and William.

The peak hurricane season usually runs from August to October.
