Greece

Greece is introducing seasonal tourist taxes to solve the problem of overcrowding during the peak season:

- Low season (November to March) - 2 euros per day.

- High season (April to October) - 8 euros per day.

This approach encourages travel during off-peak periods and helps to distribute the number of tourists more evenly throughout the year. The additional revenue will go towards climate change adaptation and disaster prevention.

Important! The Greek islands of Santorini and Mykonos will charge an even higher tax of €20.00 per night.

Italy

A trial tourist tax in Venice during peak hours was announced in 2024, and the levy will be extended this year. Visitors entering the city between 8:30am and 4pm on certain dates in April, May, June and July will be charged €5.00.

United Kingdom

From July 2026, Scotland will introduce its first tourist tax, known as the visitor levy. Tourists will pay 5% of the cost of their stay in hotels, guesthouses and Airbnbs.

The fee will apply to all overnight stays, for bookings made after 1 October 2025.

Portugal

From January 2025, the Azores will introduce a €2 per person per night tax. A further 13 cities, including Lisbon and Porto, will also levy a tourist tax. The money will be used to support local infrastructure and services.

Netherlands

Amsterdam has increased its tourist tax to 12.5% ​​of the cost of accommodation, one of the highest rates in Europe.

From 2025, cruise passengers will also face higher fees, from €14 to €14.50 per person. The changes are aimed at managing tourism in the city and funding local services.

France

France is introducing a tiered tourist tax system based on accommodation types:

- Palaces: €15.60 per person per night.

- Five-star hotels: €11.38 per night.

- Four-star hotels: €8.45 per night.

- Camping: €1.95 per night.

- Unclassified accommodation: up to €15.60 per night.

This initiative is part of a broader French strategy to monetize tourism infrastructure and manage the impact of large numbers of visitors.

Thailand

A new tourism tax is being introduced in Thailand from mid-2025:

- 300 baht (around $7) for visitors arriving by land

- 150 baht (around $3.5) for travelers arriving by sea

The revenue generated will support tourism development and sustainable development efforts in the country.

Spain

The Balearic Islands, including Ibiza, Mallorca and Menorca, will see a significant increase in the Eco-Tourism Tax (ITS). Accommodation rates will increase from €4 to €6 per person per night in high season.

For cruise passengers, the fee will triple from €2 to €6 per night. In addition, the authorities are considering introducing a car rental fee based on emissions and stricter rules for rental accommodation.

New Zealand

New Zealand has significantly increased its international fee from NZ$35 to NZ$100 from October 2024. The additional funds will be used to fund sustainable tourism projects and environmental initiatives.

Japan

Japan is considering a proposal to increase its existing tourist tax from JPY1,000 to JPY5,000 per person. The significant increase is intended to curb overtourism and fund initiatives that improve the visitor experience while preserving cultural sites.

Hawaii

Hawaii plans to introduce a $25 per visitor “climate impact tax” in 2025. The funds will be used to fund environmental initiatives such as beach maintenance and firebreaks to address climate change and overtourism.
