For the first time in two decades, Spain has updated its road signs. The changes, which came into effect in July 2025, reflect current trends – the development of electric transport, inclusiveness and increased road safety. The reform was initiated by the General Directorate of Road Traffic (DGT), and the new standards are already appearing on roads across the country.
Based on data from the KIA portal, we tell you about the changes to the rules on the roads of Spain.

What new road signs have appeared in Spain?
The update includes both completely new designations and redesigned versions of old symbols. Among the key innovations:
- P-21b – Danger for people with limited mobility. The sign warns of the possible presence of people with impaired motor functions.
- P-22a – Dangerous bicycle crossing. Draws drivers' attention to areas where cyclists can cross the road.
- R-118 – Prohibition of movement for personal mobility vehicles. This concerns electric scooters and other similar devices.
- R-420 – Reserved lane for VMP. A separate lane for electric scooters and microtransport.
- S-47 – Coexistence zone. A space where pedestrians, cars and personal transport move together. The maximum speed is 20 km/h, and pedestrians have priority.

Also, there are signs for cycle paths (S-65b), waiting areas for two-wheeled vehicles (S-49), electric filling stations (S-105c-f) and winter tire requirements (R-412b).
These changes reflect Spain’s commitment to environmentally friendly and safe transportation that takes into account the needs of all road users.

Old road signs in Spain have been modernized
Classic signs have also been redesigned, including:
- Instead of a steam locomotive, a crossing sign without a barrier now features a modern electric train.
- The “School Zone” sign has been updated with a girl leading a boy by the hand, a symbol of gender equality.
- The images of tractors, mopeds and motorcycles have been modernized to match modern models.
The updated fonts have made the signs more readable and clearer.

The reform also provides for the creation of a single system of road signs throughout Spain - they are being standardized in color, shape and size to ensure the same visual perception in all regions of the country. The replacement is taking place gradually and in coordination with the planned updates of local municipalities, which allows avoiding unnecessary costs. The full modernization of road signs is planned to be completed within a year after the new rules come into force.
When will the update of road signs in Spain come into force?
- The new rules come into force from July 1, 2025.
- The complete replacement of old signs should be completed by July 2026.
Theoretical driving license exams are being updated gradually - driving schools have three months to adapt their curricula.
The update of road signs in Spain is a step towards a safer, more environmentally friendly and inclusive road environment. The new markings take into account the needs of modern transport, cyclists, pedestrians and people with limited mobility, and also contribute to more convenient navigation for drivers.
