Planning a vacation on the islands of Europe often starts with a simple question: where should you go to find warm weather, beautiful scenery, delicious food, and a variety of experiences? Some travelers seek consistent sunshine and beaches, others look for nature trails, mountains, and national parks, while for some, the local cuisine is the main draw.

A new study by Saga Holidays helps narrow down the choices. Analysts compared 80 island destinations in Europe and evaluated them based on three key criteria: weather, the availability of restaurants, cafes, and bars, and the number of green spaces. Nature carried the most weight in the ranking—45%—followed by weather at 35%, while the dining infrastructure accounted for 20% of the final score.

In this article, we’ll tell you which European islands were named the best for vacationing in 2026, where to go for sunshine, where to find the best food, and which destinations to choose for nature and a peaceful getaway.

How were the best European islands for vacationing determined?

The Saga Holidays ranking did not evaluate islands based solely on popularity or the number of tourists. Its goal was to identify destinations that offer the most well-rounded vacation experience: pleasant weather, plenty of places to eat and drink, and access to nature. That is why the study included not just one metric, but three different criteria that together shape the overall travel experience.

Analysts compared 80 island destinations in Europe. For each island, they considered:

1. Weather – sunshine, precipitation, wind, and temperature comfort

2. Availability of food and drinks—the number of restaurants, cafes, and bars, taking the island’s size into account

3. Green spaces—the area and percentage of the territory covered by natural green spaces

Nature had the greatest impact on the final result: green spaces accounted for 45% of the overall score. Weather accounted for 35%, while the availability of restaurants, cafes, and bars accounted for 20%. This approach makes the ranking useful not only for beach vacations but also for those seeking active itineraries, beautiful landscapes, and a more peaceful alternative to overcrowded resorts.

Top 10 European Islands for a Vacation in 2026

In the overall ranking, Spain and Croatia performed the best. The islands of these two countries took 9 out of the top 10 spots, with Portugal’s Madeira being the only destination outside of them. Tenerife took the top spot—the largest of the Canary Islands—scoring 95 out of 100 points thanks to its combination of sunny weather, natural landscapes, and a well-developed culinary scene.

The top 10 best European islands for vacationing in 2026 include:

1. Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain — 95/100

2. La Palma, Canary Islands, Spain — 94/100

3. Madeira, Portugal — 93/100

4. Korčula, Dalmatian Islands, Croatia — 92/100

5. Mljet, Dalmatian Islands, Croatia — 90/100

6. Mallorca, Balearic Islands, Spain — 89/100

7. Lošinj, Kvarner Islands, Croatia — 88/100

8. Brač, Dalmatian Islands, Croatia — 87/100

9. Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain — 86/100

10. La Gomera, Canary Islands, Spain — 85/100

The top three clearly show that in 2026, tourists will be able to choose between different vacation styles. Tenerife is ideal for those seeking sunshine, volcanic landscapes, and a well-developed tourism infrastructure. La Palma is more focused on nature and a more relaxed travel experience: the island holds the status of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Madeira, which took third place, is known for its mountain trails, ocean views, and the Laurissilva laurel forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Croatia’s strong showing is also noteworthy. Four Croatian islands made it into the top 10: Korčula, Mljet, Lošinj, and Brač. This makes the country one of the best destinations for those who want to combine the Adriatic Sea, historic cities, nature parks, and a less chaotic atmosphere compared to the most popular Mediterranean resorts.
