Majorca is preparing for one of the busiest tourist days of the summer. On August 12, the island will be in the path of a total solar eclipse, which has already led to a sharp increase in travel demand and is expected to cause heavy traffic on roads and at popular scenic spots.

The situation is complicated by the heat, dry weather, and high risk of wildfires. As a result, local authorities are implementing emergency safety measures, restricting access to certain areas, and mobilizing additional personnel to manage tourist flows. Across Spain, about 6 million visitors are expected due to the eclipse, and the fire danger in many regions remains high or very high.

The policy covers the costs of medical treatment, emergency assistance, and unforeseen situations abroad, so that even in the event of delays or route changes, you remain protected and can focus on your trip rather than on problems.

Why was a state of emergency declared in Mallorca?

The main reason for the heightened measures in Mallorca is the total solar eclipse on August 12, 2026, which will pass over the Balearic Islands. The event coincides with the peak of the tourist season, so authorities expect a significant increase in the number of people at popular viewing spots, on roads, and in natural areas.

The weather poses an additional risk. Spain is experiencing a heat wave and a very high fire risk, and large crowds of tourists in dry natural areas could complicate evacuations and the work of emergency services. According to Reuters, more than 35,000 law enforcement officers are set to be deployed across Spain to maintain order during the eclipse, and approximately 660 official viewing sites have been designated.

Authorities are also concerned about a sharp increase in traffic. On the eve of the eclipse, Spain expects about 1.5 million additional car trips, so temporary restrictions are being imposed in the busiest areas, and tourists are advised not to travel to popular locations unless necessary.

In a previous article, we reported that Europe’s tallest volcano, Mount Etna, has erupted in Italy—a red alert has been issued for aviation.

What restrictions will be in place in Mallorca?

Most restrictions are scheduled for August 12, when the island is expected to see the highest influx of people heading to eclipse-viewing sites. Mallorca’s authorities warn that approximately 20 roads leading to natural areas, beaches, lighthouses, and popular viewing spots may be subject to traffic control or closures. Most restrictions will be in effect from approximately 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., but they may be implemented earlier if roads or parking lots become overcrowded.

Particularly strict controls are planned in the Serra de Tramuntana region. The restrictions will affect sections of the Ma-10 highway, access roads to Valldemossa, Deià, Sóller, Fornalutx, and Escorca, as well as the Ma-2210 road toward Cap de Formentor. Access to certain scenic overlooks and natural areas may be completely closed once the maximum capacity is reached.

Specific rules will also apply in Palma. At Playa de Palma, traffic along the waterfront is scheduled to be restricted starting at 9:00 a.m., and around noon, controls will be extended to all major road access points to the area. Public transportation will be reinforced: a special bus line, the 00-Eclipse, will run between Plaça d’Espanya and s’Arenal approximately every five minutes.

Exceptions to the transportation restrictions are provided for local residents, workers, guests of registered accommodations, and people with a valid reason for entry. Tourists are advised to avoid unnecessary car trips and, if possible, to watch the eclipse near their hotel or other place of accommodation.

We previously reported that massive wildfires have swept across southern Europe: tourists are being evacuated in Greece, Spain, France, and Portugal.

Where and when to watch the solar eclipse in Mallorca?

A total solar eclipse will occur on the evening of August 12, 2026. In Mallorca, the Sun will begin to set shortly after the peak of the eclipse, so it’s important to choose a viewing spot with an unobstructed western horizon.

The largest crowds are expected in the western and northwestern parts of the island, particularly near the coast and the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range. Due to the expected crowds of tourists, authorities are restricting access to some popular viewing spots.

When planning your viewing, keep the following in mind:

- Avoid heading to Cap de Formentor, the Serra de Tramuntana, and other popular viewing spots at the last minute, as traffic may be blocked

- Choose a location near your hotel or the town where you are staying

- Arrive early, as parking lots and access roads can fill up quickly

- Use only certified solar eclipse viewing glasses

- Do not look at the Sun through regular sunglasses, a camera, binoculars, or a telescope without a special solar filter

- Be prepared for high temperatures, bring water with you, and avoid dry natural areas where fire restrictions are in effect.

Due to the scale of the event, authorities recommend against trying to reach the most famous viewing spots. The eclipse will be visible from many areas of Mallorca, so it’s safer to choose an accessible open location and avoid congested roads.

We previously reported that a powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck Japan.

What should tourists in Mallorca keep in mind on August 12?

On the day of the eclipse, the main challenges for travelers will stem not so much from the emergency measures themselves as from transportation issues, road closures, and large crowds. Therefore, it’s best to plan your routes around the island in advance and avoid traveling in the evening.

Tourists are advised to:

- Check for current road closures before setting out

- Allow extra travel time due to possible traffic jams

- Use public transportation instead of a rental car whenever possible

- Avoid trying to reach overcrowded viewing areas if access to them is already restricted

- Bring water, a hat, and sunscreen

- Strictly follow fire safety rules in natural areas

- Use special glasses to view the eclipse

- Confirm in advance the times for airport transfers, tours, or other booked trips

Those planning to travel through the Serra de Tramuntana, Cap de Formentor, or popular coastal areas should be especially careful. If traveling by car isn’t necessary, it’s best to limit travel around the island on August 12 and choose a viewing spot near your hotel.
