What is known about the Anak Krakatau eruption?

The Anak Krakatau volcano, located between the islands of Java and Sumatra, began an active eruption late Friday evening. According to the BMKG meteorological agency, the ash plume rose 6,000 meters on the Java side and reached 15,000 meters on the Sumatra side. The volcano has been at the second-highest alert level since July 2 of this year.

There is currently no immediate threat of a tsunami from the eruption, according to the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB). However, the 2018 tsunami caused by the eruptions of Anak Krakatau claimed the lives of more than 400 people in Java and Sumatra.

Which airports have suspended operations?

Eight airports in Indonesia have suspended operations, including the country’s main hub—Sukarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta. According to the Ministry of Transportation, the restrictions have affected more than 1,500 flights and approximately 170,000 passengers in total. At the capital’s airport alone, 964 flights have been canceled or delayed.

Leading airlines in the region have announced the cancellation of flights to and from Jakarta by the end of the day:

• Singapore Airlines;
• Malaysia Airlines;
• AirAsia;
• Lion Air Group.

The Ministry of Transportation identified Kertajati, Ahmad Yani, and Juanda airports as alternative hubs.

Safety Measures for Residents and Tourists

Indonesian authorities have urged the public to remain calm and exercise increased vigilance. Residents of regions affected by ashfall are advised to wear masks and protective eyewear, limit outdoor activities, cover water sources, and exercise caution while driving due to reduced visibility. The governors of Lampung and Jakarta provinces have implemented remote learning in schools.

Vessels in the Sunda Strait are advised to stay at least 3 kilometers away from the volcano’s crater. Ferries continue to operate as usual, and to combat the ash, the BNPB plans to conduct a cloud-seeding operation to induce heavy rain.

The situation with other volcanoes in Indonesia

Indonesia is located on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” so volcanic eruptions occur frequently in the country. At the same time as Anak Krakatau, Mount Semeru in eastern Java—located approximately 850 kilometers away—has become active. It ejected a column of ash 1 kilometer high above its summit, and residents in the vicinity are advised to stay at least 5 kilometers away from the crater.
