Each city celebrates according to its own traditions, so your choice of destination depends on the kind of vacation you’re looking for. Where to Go for New Year’s 2027 in Europe: 9 Cities

For a New Year’s trip to Europe, consider these nine cities: London, Paris, Stockholm, Berlin, Madrid, Edinburgh, Dublin, Lisbon, and Tromsø. Each has its own unique way of celebrating. In some, the main event on New Year’s Eve is a fireworks display over iconic landmarks; in others, it’s parties that last until morning, city festivals, or viewing the Northern Lights.   • Paris, France — a sound and light show on the Champs-Élysées;
  • Stockholm, Sweden — a midnight fireworks display over the Old Town and New Year’s concerts;
  • Berlin, Germany — a party at the Brandenburg Gate and a club scene;

Where to watch New Year’s Eve fireworks in Europe?

Fireworks over iconic landmarks are the highlight of New Year’s Eve in London, Paris, and Stockholm. In London, the fireworks are launched from the “London Eye” over the Thames; in Paris, over the Arc de Triomphe; and in Stockholm, over the Old Town. Each of these cities has several viewing spots, and tickets for the London show must be purchased in advance.

London: Fireworks over the Thames

Every year, around 100,000 spectators gather along the banks of the Thames to watch the fireworks launched from the “London Eye.” Tickets for this event are sold in advance. You can watch the fireworks for free from Primrose Hill or Hampstead Heath. Another option is a New Year’s Eve cruise on the Thames: classic boats with sparkling wine and music, speedboats, or leisurely river cruises.

Some of the parties take place at famous London landmarks. For example, the Natural History Museum will feature live music and a “silent disco,” and ticket holders (18+) will be able to tour the galleries. You can start the first day of 2027 with the London New Year’s Parade, which begins on January 1 at 1:00 p.m.

Paris: Light Show on the Champs-Élysées

The official street party takes place on the Champs-Élysées: a sound-and-light show is prepared for spectators, and at midnight, fireworks are launched over the Arc de Triomphe. A panoramic view of the city during the fireworks display can be enjoyed from Sacré-Cœur Square in Montmartre.

Other options include a New Year’s Eve dinner at one of the famous restaurants (reservations must be made in advance), a show at the Moulin Rouge in the Pigalle district, rooftop parties, masquerade balls, and club nights in the style of the ’80s and ’90s.

Stockholm: Fireworks over the Old Town and Concerts

Many Stockholmers celebrate New Year’s Eve at home or in restaurants with friends, but for tourists, the city hosts an annual midnight fireworks display over the Old Town. The best views are from Stadsshuset, Fjällgatan Street, and the Vesterbron and Skanstullsbron bridges. Be sure to dress warmly for your walk.

Stockholm Cathedral hosts a New Year’s concert featuring works by Haydn, Judith Bingham, and other composers. Every year at the Skansen open-air museum, Tennyson’s New Year’s poem “Ring Out, Wild Bells” is recited, and the event is broadcast on Swedish television. The Södermalm district is a great place to go bar-hopping and visit nightclubs.

New Year’s Eve Parties in Europe: Berlin and Madrid

Berlin and Madrid are great for partying until dawn. In Berlin, the main party takes place near the Brandenburg Gate, and the club scene goes on all night. In Madrid, people gather at Puerta del Sol, and the city’s bars and clubs stay open until 6 a.m. It’s best to buy tickets in advance for the most popular events in both cities.

Berlin: Brandenburg Gate and Kulturbrauerei

The party at the Brandenburg Gate draws thousands of people. The program features live music, light shows, and DJ sets, and at midnight, fireworks are set off above the Quadriga statue. Admission is by ticket only.

Berlin’s largest indoor New Year’s Eve party takes place at the Kulturbrauerei: DJ sets across several floors, a live band, and fireworks over the rooftops—all accessible with a single ticket. The city also features techno clubs, cruises on historic riverboats, and gala concerts of classical music in palaces.

Madrid: Puerta del Sol and clubs until dawn

In Spain, New Year’s Eve is called Nochevieja. The main celebration site in Madrid is the historic Puerta del Sol square, from which distances to all Spanish cities are measured. Another popular spot is the area around the Templo de Debod, an ancient Egyptian temple gifted to Spain. The fireworks are clearly visible from there.

After midnight, the festivities move to bars and clubs, which stay open until 6 a.m. Among the most famous are “Teatro Capital,” with seven dance floors, and “Joy Eslava.” Demand is high, so it’s best to buy tickets in advance. Madrileños start the morning of January 1 with churros: San Ginés, the most famous chocolate and churro shop, has been open for over 130 years, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

New Year’s Festivals in Europe: Edinburgh, Dublin, Lisbon

Edinburgh and Dublin host large-scale city-wide New Year’s festivals, while Lisbon offers fireworks over the Tagus River and local traditions. In Edinburgh, the Hogmanay celebration lasts four days. The New Year’s festival in Dublin spans several venues, including Dublin Castle. In Lisbon, celebrations take place in squares, along the waterfront, and at viewing spots on the seven hills.

By the way, airfare in Europe could become significantly more expensive in 2027.

Edinburgh: Hogmanay

Hogmanay is a four-day program of events. Its highlight is a street party featuring music, fireworks, and a performance of “Auld Lang Syne.” A torchlight procession accompanied by bagpipes and drums winds through the city center, and the annual “Concert in the Gardens” draws large crowds.

Candlelit concerts are held at St. Giles’ Cathedral. In the morning, festival-goers can take part in the annual Loony Dook—a dip in the waters of the Firth of Forth. The largest events take place in Edinburgh, though Hogmanay traditions are celebrated throughout Scotland.

Dublin: New Year’s Festival

The city’s main event is the annual New Year’s Festival, held at several venues, including Dublin Castle. The program features live performances, music, DJ sets, and a wide selection of food. The New Year is ushered in with a light show over the River Liffey.

Dublin is easy to explore on foot, so before midnight you can still make it to Christ Church Cathedral—the city’s oldest building—and the Guinness Storehouse. The next day, you can visit Dublin’s pubs or catch an afternoon concert at Dublin Castle.

Lisbon: miradouros and the nightlife of Bairro Alto

Thousands of people ring in the New Year in the city center and along the Tagus River, but the best view of the fireworks is from the miradouros—viewing platforms on the seven hills surrounding the capital. Popular gathering spots include Praça do Comércio, Portugal’s largest square, and the 16th-century Torre de Belém. The celebrations are accompanied by live music, parties, and Portuguese sparkling wine, espumante.

For a gourmet New Year’s in Lisbon, there are Michelin-starred restaurants, and many hotels and restaurants prepare special New Year’s Eve dinners. Other options include a private river cruise, a fado concert, a bar crawl, or an evening in the Bairro Alto neighborhood with its clubs and bars.

New Year’s Above the Arctic Circle: Tromsø and the Northern Lights

For an off-the-beaten-path New Year’s trip, consider Tromsø, Norway, located 200 miles above the Arctic Circle. They set off fireworks here too, and afterward, you might catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. Locals ring in the New Year at a high altitude: they climb Mount Storsteinen on foot or by cable car. From there, you can see the city lights and the fireworks.

Tromsø can serve as a base for a trip into the Arctic wilderness, which is located just over an hour from the city. On New Year’s Eve, tour companies organize excursions to view the Northern Lights and go dog sledding. After midnight, some locals head to house parties, but bars and restaurants remain open. It’s a good idea to reserve a table for dinner in advance: not all establishments are open between Christmas and New Year’s.

New Year’s Traditions in Europe: What Should You Try?

Every city on the list has its own New Year’s rituals that tourists can take part in. Some are related to food, others to music, poetry, or winter swimming. Knowing these customs will help you choose a city and plan your New Year’s Eve itinerary. Here are some traditions worth knowing before your trip:

  1. Lisbon — Eat 12 raisins one by one at midnight, washing them down with a glass of espumante.
  2. Madrid — Eat 12 grapes in the last 12 seconds before midnight.
  3. Madrid — Start January 1 with a breakfast of churros.
  4. Edinburgh — Sing “Auld Lang Syne” and join the torchlight procession.
  5. Edinburgh — Take a dip in the Firth of Forth during the Loony Dook.
  6. Stockholm — listen to Tennyson’s poem “Ring Out, Wild Bells” at Skansen.
  7. Stockholm — greet friends with the Swedish phrase “gott nytt år.”
  8. Tromsø — climb to a high point by midnight, just like the locals.

How to plan a New Year’s trip to Europe?

It’s best to plan a New Year’s trip to Europe in advance, as major events and venues are in high demand. Before your trip, you should check a few things:

  • buy tickets for the city’s main New Year’s event;
  • reserve a table for a festive dinner;
  • check the operating hours of venues between Christmas and New Year’s;
  • choose a vantage point for the fireworks in advance;
  • pack warm clothes for Stockholm.

Remember! A New Year’s trip to Europe requires preparation, and travel insurance is one of the things you should take care of before departure.
