Bulgaria entry rules for Germans
Germans are not required to obtain a visa for entry into Bulgaria. You can travel freely with a valid passport or ID card. It’s important to note that there are different conditions for short-term and long-term stays, which should be reviewed ahead of your trip.
How long are German citizens allowed to stay in Bulgaria?
Germans can stay in Bulgaria without a specific time limit, provided they meet necessary conditions like residence registration after a certain period. If you plan to stay longer than 90 days, be sure to check and adhere to local residency and registration rules.
Travel documents for Germans going to Bulgaria
German citizens need these documents to travel to Bulgaria:
- Valid passport or ID card to confirm identity and nationality.
- Proof of travel purpose, like an invitation letter or hotel booking.
- Sufficient financial proof, which could be requested during the trip.
- Medical insurance that covers all medical expenses throughout the stay.
Long-term stay requirements in Bulgaria
If staying in Bulgaria for more than 90 days, you must fulfill these requirements:
- Register your residence with the local municipal office or police department.
- Provide proof of financial means if required for specific registrations.
- Obtain medical insurance if employment or benefits are planned.
- Secure a work permit if your stay is related to a job.
Timely submission of documents to local authorities is essential to avoid penalties or restrictions.
If you don’t have the right to enter Bulgaria without a visa, you may need an airport transit visa.
An airport transit visa can be single-entry, double-entry, or, as an exception, multiple-entry, with a validity period of three months from the date of its issuance.
What does an A-type transit visa do?
An airport transit visa entitles a foreigner to cross the border or stay in the international transit zone of the airport in the event of a transit landing or change of flights in order to continue traveling to another country.
If you want to travel to Bulgaria with your pet, your pet will need a microchip, proof of rabies vaccination, and a health certificate approved by a veterinarian. Part of the medical certificate is a written statement by the owner or person accompanying the animals that the animals are not subject to movement for the purpose of selling or transferring these goods.
Your pet must also be accompanied by an animal's passport.
