Health care in big cities like Quito and Guayaquil is at a high level of development. Hospitals usually have modern and professional equipment. In total, there are several hundred patients per doctor in Ecuador. Medicine in the Galapagos Islands is limited. Most medications are available by prescription.
To call an ambulance dial 131.
Travelers are responsible for their own health care activities, including access to antiviral drugs and medical advice. Private treatment can be very expensive, and private hospitals need a credit card guarantee for hospitalization. Ecuador’s public health system provides the same level of assistance to locals and foreigners free of charge. However, quality / specialized treatment may not always be available outside major cities.
Make sure you have adequate travel and health insurance, as well as available funds to cover the costs of treatment abroad and repatriation. In life-threatening emergencies, in principle, every private or public health care institution is required by law to provide care to patients.
Children born in Ecuador automatically acquire national citizenship. However, it should be noted that the country does not allow dual citizenship.
