Also, there is the granting of citizenship by:

1. Obtaining a Golden Visa.

Currently, this option for obtaining citizenship is not possible, but the authorities plan to issue citizenship for investment.

El Salvador's parliament has overwhelmingly approved a law making Bitcoin/BTC legal tender in the Central American country. But the local authorities decided to go further and create a golden visa for crypto-investors.

This initiative should interest ex-pats. Such a visa will allow foreigners who invest 3 BTC or more in the country's economy (about $110,000) to become residents of the country.

Such investments are allowed to be directed to the purchase of real estate/capitalization of local businesses. However, the authorities will identify alternative ways to invest over time.

2. Naturalization

Documents issued abroad must be properly translated into Spanish and certified.

The list of persons who have the right to obtain the status of a Salvadoran citizen through naturalization:

• Persons originating from Spain or a Latin American country who have lived for one year in El Salvador;
• Foreigners of any origin who have lived in the country for five years, including temporary and permanent residences;
• A foreigner who is married to a citizen of El Salvador who has lived in the country for at least two years before or after the marriage;
• Refugees or stateless persons (except for people from Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica).

What documents are required for submitting an application:

• The sample application must contain all the necessary data and be signed by the interested party (the application is valid for three months).
• Legible original birth certificate in good condition.
• Certificate of solvency.
• Current certificate of absence/presence of criminal records from El Salvador.
• A photocopy of a valid passport of all used pages and the original document for comparison.
• A photocopy of the updated identity document of the husband or wife, if he/she is Salvadoran, and if he/she is a foreigner, as well as a valid residence card.
• Marriage certificate.
• A certificate issued by the embassy or consulate of the interested party's country of origin stating that the country allows dual citizenship.
