After a foreigner receives a work permit from the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, he can apply to the Ethiopian Immigration Service for a residence permit.

Procedure

Apply in person:

1. To apply for a residence permit, the applicant must contact the Ministry of Foreign Affairs 
2. Get the application form from the relevant authority.
3. Fill out the application form with the necessary data.
4. Make sure you have all the documents
5. Send the application form along with the documents to the relevant official.
6. The address is listed in the office location and contact section below.
7. The authorities will now check your application and verify the submitted documents.
8. After the verification process, the authorities will issue a residence permit to the applicant.

Apply online:

1. To apply for a residence permit online, click on the following https://www.evisa.gov.et/residence-id/residence-id-types/for-family# 
2. Select the resident ID and select the type of resident ID that the applicant should submit.
3. Enter your visa details and click the "I'm not a robot" checkbox, then click "Continue".
4. The next tab asks for the applicant's personal information to be entered and then the customer has to click on the Next button.
5. The applicant must upload the digital copies of the documents (as required) mentioned in the Required Documents section of this page.
6. Finally, review the documents and click the Submit button.
7. Payment for this procedure can be made online.
8. If all the above procedures have been properly followed by the applicant, the resident card will be issued within a month during a visit to the office.

When obtaining a residence permit, the applicant must have the necessary documents with him.

• Satisfactory proof of financial support
• The letter of guarantee issued by the Embassy is duly completed and certified.

Citizenship can be acquired in Ethiopia by birth or later by naturalization.

By birth

Those who receive citizenship by birth include:

• Children born anywhere whose at least one parent is an Ethiopian citizen; or
• Abandoned children or orphans found in the country whose parents are unknown but presumed to be Ethiopian nationals.

Through naturalization

Naturalization may be granted to persons who have resided in the country for a sufficient period of time to prove that they understand one of the languages ​​used in Ethiopia, as well as the customs and traditions of the society. The general provisions are that applicants must be of good character and conduct; have no criminal record, and be legally and economically self-sufficient. Applicants must have resided in the country for four years and renounce any other citizenship. In addition to foreigners who meet the criteria, other persons can also be naturalized:

• Wife of an Ethiopian citizen after two years of marriage and a one-year period of residence in the country after marriage;
• Adopted children whose parents are citizens of Ethiopia can decide to acquire citizenship if the parents live in the country;
• Minor children may be automatically naturalized when their father acquires citizenship; or
• Persons who have rendered exceptional service to the nation may be naturalized without any other conditions.
