Acquisition of citizenship
Residency in Ghana allows foreigners to reside in Ghana for a specified period. A residence permit may be granted to foreigners who plan to stay in Ghana for a significant period. It can usually be issued for a period of one to four years upon first entry and no more than eight years in total. One of the requirements for a permit is that the applicant must be legally admitted to Ghana at the time of application. Dual citizenship
Ghanaian law allows for dual citizenship. This means that a Ghanaian can hold the citizenship of any other country and remain a Ghanaian. However, a person with dual citizenship cannot hold certain public positions and cannot be a deputy or speaker of the parliament. The Supreme Court of Ghana has given reasons that people with dual citizenship cannot hold public office due to conflict of interest, national security and state loyalty to Ghana and confidentiality.
Citizenship can be obtained in Ghana by birth or later through naturalization.
By birth
Those who acquire citizenship by birth include:
- children born anywhere who have at least one grandparent who is a Ghanaian citizen by birth; or
- abandoned children or orphans who have not reached the age of seven, who have been found on the territory of the country.
