Citizenship

The most common residence permit is valid for one year, but permits can be obtained that are valid for up to three years. The residence permit can be renewed, and the updated permit can be valid for a maximum of three years.

Documents:

Copies of the bio-data page and all pages with stamps of your current passport, if the current passport is less than five years old, then applicants must submit their previous passport.
Applicants who are unable to present their previous passport must apply for travel documents for the last five (5) years from the Guyana passport office and provide proof of legal residence in the country in which they reside. For potential applicants in the Caribbean, they must provide proof of legal residence in the country in which they currently reside, including CSME certificates, work permits, permanent residence permits, etc.
Original and copy of the statutory declaration from the Justice of the peace or authorized juror in Guyana.
A copy of the documentation confirming that you are coming to move to Guyana, such as transport, rent, rental receipt, business license, etc.
If you are disabled or financially retired, you must provide a Social Security card with a pension letter, bus ticket, medical letter, or Social Security card.
If you are a student, a copy of the Certificate, student card and letter from the university must provide a visit covering the duration of study.
A copy of a motor vehicle, motorcycle or recreational boat registration, certificate of ownership or, if necessary, another form of ownership must be provided.
Intentions to purchase a new vehicle must be indicated in the statutory declaration or a copy of the offer for the vehicle must be provided.
A detailed list of household and personal items, which should be defined and quantified in detail.

Guyana citizenship is usually obtained by birth in Guyana; or according to the rules of jus sanguinis, that is, by birth abroad for parents with Guyana citizenship. It can also be granted to individuals belonging to the country or permanent residents who have lived in the country for a certain period of time through naturalization. Currently, Guyana does not have a program for obtaining citizenship through investment in this country.

By birth.

People who were born in the territory, except in cases where the father has diplomatic immunity or is a citizen of a country at war with Gayana;
People who were born abroad to at least one of the parents who was born in Guyana;
People who were born on planes or vessels registered in Guyana or on unregistered planes or vessels owned by the government.

By registration

Citizenship by registration includes those who have a family or historical relationship with Gayana. Persons who acquire citizenship by registration include:

People who were the spouse or widow of a citizen who acquired citizenship at the time of independence, or should have acquired citizenship, except for the death of the spouse;
People who, at the time of independence, were ordinary residents of Guyana for the previous ten years for a period of five years;
Minors who were born to one of the Guyanese parents or parents who would have obtained such citizenship during independence if the father had not died before independence;
After getting independence, the wife of a citizen who does not pose a threat to national security or public order;
People who are citizens of a Commonwealth country or the Republic of Ireland, who have become residents of Guyana and have lived in the territory or worked in the government for at least five years;
Legally adopted minors under the age of eighteen have the right to register after the adoption order is issued;
People who were born to a Guyana mother who have been declared stateless because of the previous inability of married women to transfer their citizenship to their children, unless they pose a threat to national security.

For naturalization

Ordinary naturalization in Guyana can be obtained by adults with legal capacity who have lived in the territory for 12 months prior to submitting the application, have a good character and intend to be a resident of Guyana. Applicants apply to the minister in charge of immigration, who examines whether the applicant has lived in the territory for seven years and whether he poses a threat to national security. After approval, applicants must take an oath of Allegiance.

Loss of citizenship

Citizens can voluntarily refuse from belonging to Guyana if the declarant is a legal age and has the opportunity to acquire another citizenship, which eliminates the prospect of statelessness within twelve months. A waiver cannot be accepted if Guyana is at war with the proposed new source of citizenship. Denaturalization can occur if a person has obtained citizenship through fraud, false representation or concealment; if they have committed acts of high treason; if they have committed acts of disloyalty or service to a foreign government; if they are found guilty of certain criminal offenses; and to acquire another citizenship.
