Digital nomads in Italy for Cape Verde citizenship

Italy has launched a new visa for digital nomads that allows remote workers to live and work in the country for up to one year.

Who can apply for the visa?

According to the wording of official documents, a digital nomad is a foreigner who is a citizen of a country outside the EU and performs highly skilled labor activities remotely using "advanced technological means". This means that people working remotely for foreign companies, as well as self-employed individuals, can apply for the visa. 

Main requirements:

• Minimum income: €28,000 per year before taxes for the main applicant. If your spouse and children are moving with you, the amount should be higher.
• Proof of remote work: Documents confirming at least six months of previous experience as a digital nomad.
• Health insurance: valid and reliable health insurance for the entire period of stay in Italy.
• Accommodation: confirmation of the availability of suitable housing for the period of visa validity (rental or purchase agreement).
• No criminal record: a certificate of no criminal record for the last five years.
• Employer's declaration (if any): a signed declaration from your employer (if you are not self-employed).

What is the validity period of the Italian digital nomad visa

The visa (in fact, a residence permit) is issued for 1 year with the right to renew it annually, provided that the initial requirements are met. After 5 years, you can obtain a permanent residence permit.

Can I bring my family with me to Italy?

Yes, you can bring your family members with you, but their residence permit is granted by the Italian police.

How to apply for a visa: the main steps

1. Make an appointment at the Italian Consulate in your country of residence.

2. Gather a package of required documents, including a passport, a certificate of employment/income, health insurance, a certificate of housing availability, a certificate of no criminal record, and any employer declarations (if any).

3. Visit the consulate at the appointed time and submit the application along with the full package of documents.

4. After the application is approved, you have 8 days from the date of arrival in Italy to apply for a residence permit (permesso di soggiorno).
