Obtaining a visa to stay for the purpose of using medical services.
A visa to stay for the purpose of using medical services is issued to foreign patients and accompanying persons arriving in Japan for treatment (including short-term inpatient medical examination).
The scope of medical services.
The visa applies not only to treatment in medical institutions but also to a wide range of medical services, from various types of medical examinations to treatment at hot springs (inpatient medical examination of the Ningen Dock type, general medical examination, dental treatment, restorative and health procedures).
Multiple-entry visas.
If necessary, a multiple-entry visa is issued to foreign patients. However, the issuance of a multiple-entry visa involves a maximum period of up to 90 days for each entry.
Since the submission of a "Treatment Plan" from a doctor is required when issuing a multiple-entry visa, please obtain it in advance through the organization acting as a guarantor.
Accompanying persons.
If necessary, it is allowed to accompany a foreign patient both by his relatives and by persons who do not have family relations with the patient.
If necessary, visas identical to the patient's visa are issued to accompanying persons. At the same time, due to the fact that the accompanying person is visiting Japan for the purpose of providing personal services to the patient, he/she cannot engage in any activity for the purpose of making a profit or receiving a reward.
The validity period of the visa is determined according to the state of the foreign patient's illness.
If necessary, it is possible to get a visa for up to 3 years.
Term of stay
The period of stay is determined according to the state of the foreign patient's illness.
A stay of more than 90 days is allowed only if the patient is hospitalized. In this case, the patient needs to obtain a Certificate of Eligibility in Japan from the Immigration Bureau of the Ministry of Justice of Japan.
The certificate can be obtained through the staff of the medical facility where the treatment will be carried out or the patient's relatives living in Japan.
Description of the visa procedure
● Foreign patients who wish to undergo treatment or use other types of medical services in medical facilities in Japan should check the list of host guarantor organizations (such as international relations coordinators working in the field of medicine, travel agencies, etc.).
List of host organizations-guarantors (registered travel agencies)
List of Embassies and Consulates General of Japan
It is necessary to contact the competent organization from the list and make an appointment with it to use medical services.
● After reaching an agreement with the medical institution, where the treatment will be carried out, it is necessary to obtain via the host organization-guarantor a certificate from the medical institution about the planned medical services and references from the guarantor (as well as a Treatment Plan, if necessary)
● In addition, foreign patients who need to stay in Japan for the purpose of hospitalization for up to 90 days must submit the Certificate of Eligibility in Japan from the Immigration Bureau of the Ministry of Justice of Japan, as well as other necessary documents to the Embassy or Consulate General of Japan of the relevant territorial jurisdiction.
The certificate can be obtained through the staff of the medical facility where the patient will be hospitalized, or the patient's relatives who live in Japan and act as representatives.
