Residency in Laos

To obtain the right to permanent residence, you must have long-term, continuous residence in the Republic of Laos, or be someone in whom the country is interested. 

So, they can apply for permanent residence:

• People have been legally residing near the Republic for at least 10 years. You can stay out of the country for 2 months during the year.
• Highly qualified specialists. For example, scientists, engineers, doctors, and teachers.
• People who have shown special services to the Republic.
• People who are able to bring capital or establish production within the country, investors, businessmen who have lived in the country for at least 5 years.

Citizenship

An important aspect is the prohibition of dual citizenship. 

You have the right to get a passport:

• By birthright.
• Those who have one of their parents as a Laotian citizen. The child is automatically considered a citizen of the country.
• Have passed the path of the naturalization.

Under the term naturalization, certain requirements are imposed on a person who wishes to become a citizen of Laos:

• age over 18 years;
• to be fluency in Lao language;
• knowledge of the country's traditions;
• lack of a criminal past;
• lack of other citizenship;
• permanent residence permit.

Citizenship can be lost willingly or forcibly. The grounds for deprivation of citizenship are:

• The acceptance of citizenship of another state.
• If you have become a citizen by naturalization and are engaged in activities that disgrace the country.
• If you obtained citizenship fraudulently.
