Visit World - US Citizens Traveling to Libya: Entry Rules, Visa Requirements & Regulations

Unvaccinated visitors must provide a negative result of a PCR test (NAAT) or antigenic test (rapid test) taken within 72 hours prior to traveling to Libya.

Fully vaccinated visitors with approved vaccination certificates do not need to provide a negative COVID-19 test result.

Visitors to Libya must obtain a visa at one of the diplomatic missions of Libya, if they do not come from one of the countries exempt from the visa regime. For Turkish citizens, you can apply for a visa upon arrival at the airport.

Visa-free regime: Jordan, Tunisia.

Visa on arrival: Turkey.

Passport holders of the following countries are prohibited from entering the country: Israel, Bangladesh, Iran, Pakistan, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen.

Applicants holding a valid or expired Israeli visa will also be denied entry. Israeli citizens will be denied entry and transit, even if they do not leave the aircraft and follow the same flight.

Permission to visit Libya

Applicants wishing to enter Libya for different purposes must obtain permission from Libyan companies or agents. These companies and agents send the necessary documents to the embassy to obtain an entry permit. It takes approximately 2-10 days to obtain approval. After obtaining approval with a visa reference number, the visa can be issued for entry into Libya. Single entry visas issued are usually valid for 45 days with an allowed stay of 30 days, while multiple entry visas can be valid for 6 or 18 months. Current visas are valid only in northern regions of Libya, travelers cannot visit the southern desert regions.

Libya Tourist Visa

The Libyan Tourist Visa is issued to applicants intending to visit Libya for tourism and sightseeing purposes. You can get a tourist visa to Libya both at the embassy and upon arrival (for Turkish citizens). The Libyan tourist visa is issued for 45 days (in case of obtaining this visa upon arrival, the visa is valid for 30 days). However, you can stay in Libya for 30 days in each case.

Libya Transit Visa

The visa is granted for transit and crossing Libya's border along the coast. Usually, it takes about 5 business days to process a visa, but to guarantee arrival on the specified date, it is better to send documents 10 days before arrival.

A transit visa can not be used for tourist purposes, as well as for employment in a country without a work visa.

A transit visa is usually valid for 30 days from the date of issue. The duration of stay in Libya is two weeks (14 days), starting from the date of entry.

Please ensure that your passport meets the following legal requirements:

- The passport must be valid for at least six months after you leave Libya.

- There is no Israeli stamp on the passport.

- The passport must contain at least two blank pages.

In Libya, cats and dogs that meet the following requirements are not quarantined:

Microchip for animals

Your pet must have a pet microchip that complies with ISO 11784/11785 standards and documentary proof of the date of installation of the chip.

Vaccinations

Your pet must be vaccinated against rabies from 30 days to 12 months before entering Libya.

Health certificate

A few days before traveling, a licensed veterinarian must complete a veterinary certificate for Libya. Libyan veterinary certificate and other documents must be translated into Arabic.

Import Permit

An import permit is not required when entering Libya with a pet. A permit is required for commercial transportation.

Entry to Libya by air

Pets can enter Libya through Tripoli International Airport. All domestic dogs and cats should not show signs of diseases transmitted to humans during an inspection at the airport of entry. It is always advisable to have with you a certain document certifying the ownership of your pet.

Since June 2017, the transportation of pets to or from Qatar is prohibited.

Import and export of foreign currency are not limited if declared, of the national currency is prohibited. The legal driving age in Libya is 18 years old. The national driving license on Libya's roads is not enough for the government to allow driving. An IDP or International Driver's Permit is the supporting document you must have if you plan to drive in Libya. Since IDP is a decryption of your driver's license, you should always carry both travel documents with you while driving.

In case you choose to stay in Libya for longer or permanently reside, IDP will allow you to drive the vehicle when applying for a Libyan driver's license.
