Citizenship of Libya

This is an entry visa to Libya, which is granted to the spouse of a Libyan citizen or a member of their family (sons or daughters of a Libyan citizen). The applicant must apply directly to the Libyan Embassy to obtain a visa by submitting the following documents. This type of visa, like a diplomatic visa, is free. Please note that although “spouse” is a husband or wife that is considered in relation to their partner, this term is often used in Libya to refer to the foreign wife of a Libyan husband.

Spouse visa requirements

The following documents are required for any Libyan citizen who wishes to bring his foreign wife to Libya:

Correctly completed visa application form.
One personal photo.
Copy of Libyan husband's passport.
Written permission from husband.
A copy of the marriage contract.

Requirements for family visa

Any Libyan citizen who wishes to obtain a visa to enter Libya for their children will need the following documents:
Correctly completed visa application form.
One personal photo.
Birth certificate.
A copy of the father/mother's passport (father or mother's passport).
The written permission of the father/mother (from father or mother).

Citizenship of Libya can be obtained at birth, by origin, or later in life by naturalization.

By birth

A child born in Libya whose father is a Libyan.
A child born in Libya whose mother is a Libyan citizen and the father has unknown citizenship or is a stateless person or a foreigner.
Abandoned children or orphans whose parents are unknown, or discovered on the territory of the country.

By origin

Children born anywhere whose father is Libyan. However, if the child was born abroad, the birth must be registered with the relevant authorities.
Children born anywhere who are extramarital or whose father has unknown citizenship or is a stateless person, and the mother is a Libyan, or whose father is a foreigner and whose mother is a Libyan. Citizenship is obtained after the administrative process and at the discretion of the state.

By naturalization

Naturalization can be given to persons who have lived in the territory for a sufficient period of time to confirm that they understand the customs and traditions of society. The general provisions are that applicants have good character and behavior, have no criminal record, are economically self-sufficient, have legally entered the country, and have not reached the age of fifty. Candidates must have resided in the country for ten years. In Libya, adoption is prohibited and there are no provisions in the charter on the acquisition of citizenship by adopted children. Minor children cannot obtain citizenship due to naturalization when their father naturalizes. In addition to foreigners who meet the criteria, other individuals who may be naturalized include:

Wife of a Libyan citizen after two years of marriage.
Persons who have exceptional merits to the country.

Loss of citizenship

Citizens of Libya can not renounce their citizenship. Citizens who have been naturalized may be deprived of citizenship in Libya for residing outside the country for more than two years or for obtaining dual citizenship without obtaining government permission, or for minor children if their parents are deprived of citizenship. Naturalized persons may lose their citizenship by committing acts against the interests of the state, committing serious crimes, disloyal actions, crimes against the state or state security, living abroad without the permission of the state, or fraud.
