Tourist visa to Lithuania for Filipino citizens
Filipinos need to obtain a short-stay Schengen visa (type C) before travelling to Lithuania for tourism. This visa is intended for short trips and allows Filipino citizens to visit not only Lithuania but also other countries in the Schengen Area. The total permitted stay cannot exceed 90 days within any 180-day period.
What types of visas to Lithuania are available to Filipinos?
If the purpose of the trip is tourism, Filipinos need a short-stay Schengen visa (type C). Depending on the visa issued, it may allow:
- one entry into the Schengen Area;
- two entries;
- multiple entries during the validity period of the visa.
Regardless of the number of permitted entries, the total stay in Lithuania and other Schengen countries cannot exceed 90 days within any 180-day period.
Lithuania also issues a national visa (type D). It is intended for certain categories of long-term stay and may be issued for up to 12 months. A type D visa is not required for an ordinary tourist trip.
How can Filipino citizens obtain a tourist visa to Lithuania?
The process of applying for a Lithuanian Schengen visa begins with checking which authority accepts visa applications in the Philippines or in the applicant's country of legal residence.
1. Determine the competent visa authority. Filipinos may submit an application through a Lithuanian diplomatic mission or consular office, a Lithuanian visa application centre or, in certain countries, through the diplomatic mission of another Schengen country that represents Lithuania for visa purposes.
2. Complete the visa application form. The Schengen visa application must be completed online through the MIGRIS system. The application form can be completed in Lithuanian or English. Once completed, it must be printed and signed. For a minor applicant, the form is signed by a parent or legal guardian.
3. Prepare the supporting documents. The application must be accompanied by documents that allow the visa authority to verify the purpose of the trip, accommodation arrangements, sufficient financial means and the applicant's intention to leave the Schengen Area after the trip.
4. Schedule an appointment. If applications are accepted through a visa application centre or diplomatic mission, Filipino citizens must book an available appointment according to the rules of the relevant authority.
5. Submit the passport, documents and biometric data. During the appointment, the applicant submits the required documents and, where applicable, provides biometric data. Fingerprints normally do not need to be collected again if they were taken for a previous visa application less than 59 months ago and can be retrieved from the Visa Information System (VIS). However, the visa authority may require fingerprints to be taken again if there are doubts concerning the applicant's identity. Children under the age of 12 are exempt from the fingerprint requirement.
6. Pay the applicable fees. A visa fee is charged for processing the application. If the application is submitted through an external visa service provider, an additional service fee may apply.
7. Receive the decision. Once the application has been processed, the Filipino citizen receives the passport with the visa or an official notification of refusal stating the reasons for the decision.
After receiving the visa, Filipinos should immediately check its validity dates, the number of permitted entries and the maximum permitted duration of stay.
An application can be submitted up to 6 months before the planned date of travel. As a general rule, it should be lodged no later than 15 calendar days before the trip, although in justified urgent cases the Lithuanian visa authority may accept an application later.
What documents do Filipinos need to obtain a visa to Lithuania?
To apply for a tourist Schengen visa to Lithuania, Filipino citizens usually need to prepare:
- a completed and signed visa application form;
- a valid passport;
- a recent photograph that meets the required specifications;
- proof of the purpose of the tourist trip;
- a hotel reservation or other proof of accommodation;
- documents confirming the travel itinerary and planned transportation;
- proof of sufficient financial means for the stay and return journey;
- documents confirming employment, studies, business activity or other circumstances of the applicant, if required for applicants from the Philippines;
- evidence demonstrating the applicant's intention to return after the trip;
- travel medical insurance valid for the Schengen Area;
- any additional documents requested by the visa authority.
The passport must meet three main requirements:
- it must have been issued within the previous 10 years;
- it must remain valid for at least 3 months after the planned date of departure from the Schengen Area;
- it must contain at least 2 blank pages.
To obtain a Schengen visa, Filipinos must also have travel medical insurance with minimum coverage of EUR 30,000. The insurance must be valid for travel within the Schengen Area and cover, in particular, emergency medical treatment, hospitalisation and repatriation.
The final list of documents should always be checked according to the applicant's citizenship and place of application, as requirements may vary for Filipino citizens applying from different countries.
How much does a visa to Lithuania cost for Filipinos?
The standard visa fee for a Lithuanian Schengen visa is:
- EUR 90 — standard fee;
- EUR 45 — for children aged 6 to 11;
- EUR 0 — for children under 6.
If the application is submitted through the external service provider VF Services (VFS Global), Lithuania currently indicates the following standard service fees:
- EUR 22 — if a Lithuanian visa authority operates in the country of application;
- EUR 41 — if there is no Lithuanian visa authority in the country.
The exact amount should be checked with the relevant visa application centre, as it may depend on the country where Filipino citizens submit their application.
When can Filipino citizens expect a decision on a Lithuania visa?
Under the standard procedure, a decision on an admissible Schengen visa application should be made within 15 calendar days from the date of submission.
If a more detailed examination of the application is required, the processing period may be extended to up to 45 calendar days. This may happen, for example, when additional information or supporting documents are required.
Filipinos should also take into account the possible waiting time for an available appointment at a visa application centre or consulate, as this period is not included in the visa processing time.
If the application is refused, the applicant must be informed of the reasons for the decision. Under the current rules of Lithuania, a refusal may be appealed before a court within 14 days from the date the decision is received.
How long is a visa to Lithuania valid for Filipinos?
A Schengen visa C allows a maximum stay of 90 days within any 180-day period. However, a visa issued to a particular Filipino citizen may permit a considerably shorter stay.
The visa specifies:
- the period during which it is valid;
- the number of permitted entries;
- the maximum number of days the holder may stay in the Schengen Area.
For example, even if the visa is valid for several months, this does not mean that the Filipino citizen may remain in Lithuania continuously for the entire validity period. The permitted duration of stay indicated on the visa must always be observed.
A multiple-entry visa allows Filipinos to make repeated trips during its validity period, but it does not remove the general 90/180-day rule.
Can Filipinos extend their stay in Lithuania?
If exceptional circumstances prevent a Filipino citizen from leaving Lithuania before the visa or authorised period of stay expires, they may apply for an extension of the Schengen visa and/or the authorised period of stay.
Possible grounds include:
- force majeure;
- humanitarian reasons;
- serious personal reasons.
The circumstances requiring the Filipino citizen to remain in Lithuania longer must be supported by appropriate documents.
In Lithuania, the state fee for extending the validity of a Schengen visa and/or the authorised period of stay is EUR 30. If the applicant provides evidence that departure is impossible due to force majeure or humanitarian reasons, no fee is charged.
An extension of a short-stay visa is not intended as a way to transition to ordinary long-term residence in Lithuania. If Filipinos plan to remain in Lithuania for more than 90 days, for example for employment, studies or another long-term purpose, they need to obtain the appropriate national visa or residence permit depending on their circumstances.
