Education in higher education institutions in Lithuania is conducted both in programs that include the assignment of an academic degree, and in programs that do not include the assignment of an academic degree.
There are two types of programs that include academic degrees: the college program and the university program. Training in these programs is divided into three levels:
- Level I – applied bachelor's degree and academic bachelor's degree
- Level II – Master's degree
- Level III-doctoral studies
First – level applied bachelor's degree programs are taught in colleges, and first-level academic bachelor's degree programs are taught in universities. Second – level programs can only be taught by universities, while third-level programs can be taught by universities or universities together with research institutes. University programs that include awarding an academic degree can combine the first and second stages (comprehensive education).
Admission to a Lithuanian college or higher education institution is conducted online through the Lithuanian Association of higher education institutions for the organization of general admission..
People who have received education in foreign educational institutions, in accordance with the procedure established by legal acts, can be accepted for state-funded educational places in higher educational institutions of Lithuania, as well as apply for a scholarship if they:
are citizens of the Republic of Lithuania, other member states of the European Union or countries of the European Economic Area or members of their families;
citizens of states that are not members of the European Union and the European Economic Area and stateless persons who have a permanent residence permit in the Republic of Lithuania;
Lithuanians who are living abroad.
Foreign citizens and stateless persons who do not meet the above criteria are admitted to higher educational institutions in Lithuania on a contract basis.
The amount of tuition fees is set by the higher education institution independently. Students can receive a scholarship or tuition compensation.
Most educational programs are implemented in Lithuanian. However, there are also programs that are implemented in English and Russian. You can get acquainted with the programs of higher educational institutions by going to the website of AIKOS and Study in Lithuania.
The procedure for admission to private and public higher education institutions differs. Private universities and colleges may not participate in general admission to higher education institutions. Such educational institutions organize admission independently. A list of all higher education institutions can be found in the AIKOS Information System. .
