When crossing the border of Mongolia, citizens of countries covered by the visa-free regime must have a national passport/ID card valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival, and when crossing the border by car, an international driver's license.
Visa-free travel to Mongolia extended until 2027
As part of the “Years to Visit Mongolia” state tourism program, the Mongolian government has extended the temporary visa exemption for citizens of 34 countries.
Foreign tourists can travel to Mongolia without a visa for up to 30 days until January 1, 2027. The decision is aimed at supporting international tourism and simplifying travel conditions.
Who can enter without a visa
Citizens of the following countries can visit Mongolia for tourism purposes for up to 30 days:

How can I obtain a visa to Mongolia?
- At one of Mongolia's embassies or consulates abroad
- Upon arrival at the airport or border crossing point (for certain nationalities). This is only for short-term purposes, such as tourism and transit
- Electronic visas (e-Visa) can be applied for through the portal https://www.evisa.mn/
1. Applying for a visa at the embassy
- You must contact the relevant embassy/consulate to make an appointment. This can be done at https://consul.mn/?moduls=2
- The embassy/consulate will inform you which documents you need to submit to apply for a visa.
- Download the visa application form for Mongolia from the embassy/consulate website.
- Gather the necessary documents.
- Submit your application at the embassy/consulate or send it by mail.
- Pay the visa fee. The fee varies from country to country and depending on the duration of the visa.
- Sometimes you don't need to make an appointment, as the embassy may offer you the option of submitting your application by mail.
- The application will be processed within approximately five business days, depending on the country from which the tourist is applying and the method of application.
Note: If a foreigner is applying for a long-term visa, for example, for employment, they will need a sponsor in Mongolia who will obtain permission on behalf of the applicant from the Mongolian Immigration, Naturalization, and Foreign Citizens Office. Once the foreigner's sponsor receives approval, the sponsor or the relevant government agency will forward it to the diplomatic mission where the tourist will apply for a visa to Mongolia.
2. Visa on arrival
The Mongolian visa on arrival is intended for tourism or transit only. If you are traveling for reasons other than tourism or transit, you will need a sponsor to apply for a Mongolian visa in advance, or contact the nearest Mongolian embassy or consulate.
Citizens of the following countries can obtain a Mongolian visa on arrival: United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar.
We recommend that you apply online at least 5 days before your arrival in Mongolia.
Documents required for obtaining a visa upon arrival:
- a valid foreign passport, valid for 6 months from the planned date of travel;
- insurance;
- proof of accommodation (e.g., hotel reservation);
- return ticket
Upon arrival at the airport, you must have:
- Visa approval from the Mongolian Immigration Agency or the Consular Department of the Mongolian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- Completed visa application form;
- Passport photo measuring 3.5 cm x 4.5 cm;
- Proof of accommodation in Mongolia (e.g., hotel reservation);
- Return ticket;
- You must also pay a fee of 108,000 Mongolian tugriks (approximately $38).
3. Electronic visas (e-Visa)

Applicants are advised to have a digital or printed version of their e-Visa to present to airlines and Mongolian border officials when traveling to Mongolia.
Foreign citizens who are not in the countries listed above must apply for a visa at the nearest Mongolian embassy.

What are the requirements for citizens of countries that require a visa?
Foreigners who come to Mongolia for tourism do not need any invitations.
All documents must be printed and certified. The embassy does not accept copies.
Documents required for a tourist visa:
- Completed application form. The form can be found online on the embassy's website or picked up in person when submitting the application.
- original foreign passport (must be valid for at least six months before traveling to Mongolia);
- 3.5 × 4.5 cm photo (photo size is mandatory);
- proof of payment of the visa fee (the fee is non-refundable);
- proof of sufficient funds, i.e., bank statements for the last six months (if necessary)
- proof of accommodation in Mongolia, e.g., hotel reservation, residence certificate, residence letter, or hotel confirmation letter
To obtain a K2 tourist visa, you must provide the following documents:
- a copy of your passport or a valid substitute (must be valid for at least 180 days before traveling to Mongolia);
- an official invitation if the tourist is traveling with their family;
- Other necessary documents, if required (confirmation of round-trip airline ticket);
- payment receipt;
- completed application form.
To obtain a K4 tourist visa, the following documents are required for the inviting organization and legal entity:
- Official letter of request from the inviting individual or legal entity (must include the type of activity of the organization, length of stay, visa issuance point);
- Certificate of state registration of a legal entity, special license (if issued for a specific type of business activity);
- Copy of passport or equivalent valid substitute (must be valid for at least 180 days prior to travel to Mongolia); Other necessary documents as required (round-trip airline ticket reservation);
- Payment receipt;
- Completed application form (can be submitted online);
- Notice for K4 visa applicants (31-90 days);
- Notice for K4 visa applicants (up to 90 days);
Required documents for invitations from organizations and individuals:
- Official letter of request from an individual or legal entity (must include the type of activity of the organization, length of stay, visa issuance point);
- Certificate of state registration of a legal entity, special license (if issued for a specific type of business activity);

Note:
- A response will be sent to the registered email address in case of visa refusal
- The visa permit is valid for 60 days after issuance
- Short-term visitors must apply for a residence permit in accordance with the visa category to the Mongolian Immigration Agency within
- 21 days of entering the country.
- Short-term visitors must apply for a residence permit if they plan to stay for more than 180 days during the year
- Visitors may reapply after 180 days if the documents are found to be forged or the visa was obtained through a false declaration, or after 30 days if the application was denied for other reasons.
- Note: The visa officer may require you to submit additional documents to confirm the purpose of your visit.
With a regular tourist visa, you can stay in Mongolia for up to 30 days. It can be extended for another 30 days at the Mongolian Immigration Agency if the tourist submits an application for an extension at least 4 days before the expiration of your visa.
Depending on the purpose of the visit, there are different types of visas:
- “Entry” - used for foreigners staying in Mongolia for more than 90 days. An entry visa is issued to temporary visitors and residents for business and private purposes;
- “entry-exit” is used for stays in Mongolia of less than 90 days;
- “Exit-entry” is used for long-term business residents who temporarily leave Mongolia for no more than 90 days, or for permanent residents, emigrants, or stateless persons who temporarily leave Mongolia for no more than 120 days. Intended for residents with official and private purposes who are temporarily leaving Mongolia with the intention of returning.
- “Transit” applies to foreign citizens or stateless persons transiting through Mongolia.
- “Departure” - applies to a foreign citizen or stateless person who is a temporary or permanent resident for business or personal reasons and who leaves Mongolia for more than 90 days or permanently.
In general, anyone traveling for less than 90 days is considered a temporary visitor, while those staying for more than 90 days for private or official purposes are considered foreign residents.
Private purposes include study, employment, investment, family stay, and other private ventures.
A visa can be issued with single, double, or multiple entries depending on the purpose of the visit and the applicant's choice.
The period of stay for a single or double entry visa is up to 90 days, for a multiple entry visa for temporary visitors - 30 days, and for a single or double entry transit visa - 10 days. For example, a temporary visitor visa is valid for 90 days with a 30-day stay.
Is it possible to change the type of visa?
The type of visa issued to a foreign citizen or stateless person may be changed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the Office within the limits of their authority. To cancel a visa, the visa is marked “Cancelled”/
Is it possible to change the validity period of a visa?
If the visa has expired, a new visa may be issued on the basis of the previous visa.
The validity period may be extended only once for a period of up to 30 days as follows:
- the extension of a diplomatic or official visa of a transit visa holder or temporary residence is determined by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the request for extension of a regular visa is determined by the Office;
- The “exit-entry” visa of a permanent resident or emigrant of a foreign citizen or stateless person may be extended only once by a diplomatic mission, Honorary Consul of Mongolia with the permission of the Office for a period permitted by the Law of Mongolia “On the Status of Foreign Citizens.”
In what cases may entry into Mongolia be denied?
The following persons will be denied entry into Mongolia:
- children and incapacitated persons, if they are not accompanied by a guardian;
- persons convicted of criminal offenses in Mongolia with a conviction;
- persons declared persona non grata;
- persons who pose a threat to national security or public order
- persons who do not have the financial means to live and return
- from Mongolia.
Travel insurance policy
A travel insurance policy for Mongolia must include repatriation and medical insurance. The average price of the policy is up to $12,000.
Crossing the Mongolian border with children
When traveling to Mongolia with children, you must have the following documents:
- a foreign passport for the child or an entry in the parents' passport (if it is an old-style passport);
- a notarized permission to leave the country if both parents are not accompanying the minor child on the trip.
