Entry to Mongolia is possible in visa-free and visa-free regimes.
! In connection with the decision of the Government of Mongolia to declare 2023-2025 as the "Years of Visiting Mongolia", the Cabinet of Ministers has decided to temporarily exempt from visa requirements citizens of 34 countries traveling to Mongolia for tourism purposes for up to 30 days.
The decision, aimed at attracting foreign tourists and facilitating travel conditions, was made at a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers on January 4, 2023, and will be in effect until the end of 2025.
The list of countries that will be exempt from visa requirements for visiting Mongolia for up to 30 days in 2023-2025:

Starting from January 4, 2023, citizens of the above countries will be exempt from visa requirements.
This applies to the following visa categories:K2 visa for foreign nationals arriving for tourist purposes; K3 visa for border tourists; K4 visa for foreign nationals arriving to participate in cultural and sports competitions and events, to create films and content; K6 visa for foreign nationals in transit.
Citizens of the above 34 countries can extend their stay up to 30 days once if they arrive in Mongolia without a visa and stay in the country for more than 30 days. In this case, you can submit your request to the Immigration Office in person or online at
https://immigration.gov.mn/en/visa-extension/.
What are the ways to get a visa to Mongolia?
- At one of the embassies or consulates of Mongolia abroad
- Upon arrival at the airport or border crossing point (for certain nationalities). This is for short-term purposes only, such as tourism and transit
- Electronic visas (e-Visa) can be applied for through the portal https://www.evisa.mn/
1. Visa application at the embassy
- You need to contact the relevant embassy/consulate to make an appointment. This can be done by following the link https://consul.mn/?moduls=2
- The embassy/consulate will inform you what documents you need to submit to apply for a visa;
- Download the visa application form for Mongolia on the website of the embassy/consulate;
- Collect the necessary documents;
- Submit an application at the embassy/consulate or send it by mail;
- Pay the visa fee. The fee varies from country to country, as well as depending on the validity of the visa.
- Sometimes it is not necessary to make an appointment, as the embassy may offer the possibility to submit your application by mail.
- The application will be processed within approximately five business days, depending on the country from which the tourist is applying and the method of application.
Note: If a foreigner is applying for a long-term visa, for example, for employment, then a sponsor in Mongolia is required to obtain approval on behalf of the applicant from the Mongolian Immigration, Naturalization and Foreigners Department. As soon as the foreigner's sponsor receives approval, the sponsor or the relevant government agency will forward the foreigner to a diplomatic mission where the tourist will apply for a visa to Mongolia.
2. Visa on arrival
The Mongolian visa on arrival is for tourism or transit only. If you are traveling for a reason other than tourism or transit, you need to have a sponsor to apply for a visa from Mongolia in advance or contact the nearest Mongolian embassy or consulate.
Citizens of the following countries can obtain a Mongolian visa upon arrival: United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar.
We advise you to apply online at least 5 days before your arrival in Mongolia.
Documents required to apply for a visa upon arrival:
- a valid passport valid for 6 months from the planned date of travel;
- insurance;
- proof of accommodation (for example, hotel reservation);
- return ticket
Upon arrival at the airport, you must have:
- Approval of the visa at the Immigration Agency of Mongolia or the Consular Section of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mongolia.
- A completed visa application form;
- A passport photo measuring 3.5 cm x 4.5 cm;
- Proof of accommodation in Mongolia (e.g. hotel reservation);
- return ticket;
- A fee of 108,000 Mongolian tugrik (approximately 38 USD) is also required.
3. Electronic visas (e-Visa)
- K2 tourist visa;
- tourist visa K4
Applicants are advised to have a digital or printed version of their e-visa to present to airlines and Mongolian border guards when traveling to Mongolia.
Foreign nationals not residing in the above countries must apply for a visa at the nearest Mongolian embassy.
What are the requirements for citizens of countries that require a visa?
Foreigners who come to Mongolia for tourism do not need any invitations.
All documents must be printed and certified. The Embassy does not accept copies.
Documents required to apply for a tourist visa:
- a completed application form. The form can be found online on the embassy's website or picked up at the time of application;
- original passport (must be valid for at least six months before traveling to Mongolia);
- a photo of 3.5 × 4.5 cm (photo size is required);
- proof of payment of the visa fee (the fee is non-refundable);
- proof of sufficient funds, i.e. bank statements for the last six months (if necessary)
- Proof of residence in Mongolia, such as a hotel reservation, accommodation certificate, accommodation letter or hotel confirmation letter
To obtain a K2 tourist visa, you need to provide materials:
- a copy of the passport or a corresponding valid substitute (must be valid for at least 180 days before traveling to Mongolia);
- an official invitation if the tourist is traveling with his or her family;
- Other required documents as needed (round-trip airline ticket confirmation);
- receipt of payment;
- a completed questionnaire.
To obtain a K4 tourist visa, documents for the organization and the inviting legal entity are required:
- An official letter of request from an inviting individual or legal entity (must include the type of activity of the organization, duration of stay, and the point of visa issuance);
- A certificate of state registration of a legal entity, a special license (if issued for a certain type of business activity);
- A copy of your passport or a relevant valid substitute (must be valid for at least 180 days prior to traveling to Mongolia); Other required documents as needed (round-trip airfare reservation);
- Payment for the receipt;
- Completed application (you can apply online);
- Notification for K4 visa applicants (31-90 days);
- Notification for K4 visa applicants (up to 90 days);
Documents required to invite an organization and an individual:
- An official letter of request from an inviting individual or legal entity (must include the type of activity of the organization, duration of stay, and the point of visa issuance);
- A certificate of state registration of a legal entity, a special license (if issued for a certain type of business activity);
- A certificate of state registration of a legal entity, a special license (if issued for a certain type of business activity);
- A copy of the passport or a corresponding valid substitute (must be valid for at least 180 days before traveling to Mongolia);
- Other necessary documents as needed (round-trip airfare);
- Payment for the receipt;
- Completed application (you can apply online)
Note:
- A response will be sent to the registered e-mail in case of visa refusal
- The visa permit is valid for 60 days after issuance
- A short-term visitor applies for a residence permit in accordance with the visa category to the Mongolian Immigration Agency within a period of time;
- 21 days from the date of entry into the country.
- Short-term visitors must apply for a residence permit if they plan to stay for more than 180 days during the year
- The visitor can reapply after 180 days if the documents are found to be forged or the visa was obtained through a false declaration, or after 30 days if the application was denied for other reasons.
- Note: The visa officer may require you to submit additional documents to confirm the purpose of the tourist's visit.
A regular tourist visa allows you to stay in Mongolia for up to 30 days. It can be extended for another 30 days at the Mongolian Immigration Agency if the tourist applies for an extension at least 4 days before the expiration of your visa.
There are different types of visas based on their intended purpose:
- "entry" - is used for foreigners to stay in Mongolia for more than 90 days. Entry visas are issued to temporary visitors, residents for official and private purposes;
- "entry-exit" is used for staying in Mongolia for less than 90 days;
- The "exit-entry" system applies to a long-term business resident who temporarily leaves Mongolia for no more than 90 days, or to a permanent resident, expatriate, or stateless person who temporarily leaves Mongolia for no more than 120 days. It is intended for residents with official and private purposes who temporarily leave Mongolia with the intention of returning.
- "transit" - applies to a foreign citizen or stateless person for transit through the territory of Mongolia.
- "departure" - applies to a foreign citizen, stateless person who is a temporary or permanent resident for business or personal reasons who leaves Mongolia for more than 90 days or permanently.
In general, anyone traveling for less than 90 days is considered a temporary visitor, while those staying for more than 90 days for private or official purposes are considered foreign residents;
Private purposes include study, employment, investment, family stay, and other private ventures;
The visa can be issued with single, double and multiple entry depending on the purpose of the visit and the applicant's choice;
The period of stay for an entry visa with a single or double entry is up to 90 days, for a multiple entry visa for temporary visitors - 30 days, and for a transit visa with a single or double entry - 10 days. For example, an entry visa for temporary visitors is valid for 90 days with a 30-day stay.
Is it possible to change the type of visa?
The type of visa issued to a foreign citizen or stateless person may be changed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the Office within its authority. To cancel a visa, the visa is marked "Canceled"/.
Is it possible to change the validity of a visa?
If the visa has expired, a new visa can be issued on the basis of the previous visa;
The validity period can be extended only once for up to 30 days as follows:
- the extension of a diplomatic or official visa for a transit visa holder or temporary residence is determined by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and a request for an extension of a regular visa is determined by the Office;
- an "exit-entry" visa of a permanent resident or emigrant foreign citizen or stateless person may be extended only once by a diplomatic mission, Honorary Consul of Mongolia with the permission of the Office for the period allowed by the Law of Mongolia "On the Status of Foreign Citizens".
In what cases can I be denied entry to Mongolia?
The following persons will be denied entry to Mongolia:
- children and incapacitated persons, unless accompanied by a guardian;
- Persons convicted of criminal offenses in Mongolia with a conviction;
- persons declared persona non grata;
- persons who threaten national security or public order
- persons who do not have financial sources for accommodation and return
- from Mongolia.
Travel insurance policy
A travel insurance policy to Mongolia must include repatriation and medical insurance. The average price of the policy is up to 12 thousand US dollars.
Crossing the border of Mongolia with children
If you are traveling to Mongolia with children, you must have the following documents:
- a passport for the child or an entry in the parents' passport (if the passport is of the old model);
- a notarized travel permit if both parents do not accompany the minor child on the trip.
A K6 transit visa will allow you to stay in Mongolia for up to 10 days if you need to transit through the country on the way to a third destination. A transit visa can be applied for at the Mongolian border if the applicant has a flight/train ticket or has obtained a visa (if applicable) of the country they plan to visit.
Foreign citizens on international flights can transit through Mongolia without a visa for 24 hours.
Required documents for a transit visa
- An applicant for a transit visa must collect the following documents when applying at international border crossing points:
- An official invitation from an individual or a legal entity
- Copy of passport or relevant document (must be valid for at least 180 days before travel to Mongolia);
- Proof of sufficient funding, if required (round-trip air ticket booking)
- Payment Receipt
- Completed application (it is possible to apply online)
