In 2023, tourism experienced a real boom, with many popular cities once again experiencing pre-pandemic levels of visitor arrivals. However, this has led to overcrowding and higher prices.

And this is where "duplicate destinations" appear on the scene, which are expected to become the most popular travel trends in 2024. You may not be able to visit the iconic sights, but you will have an equally interesting experience. It can also help popular destinations like Dubrovnik or Venice that are struggling to cope with massive tourist flows. This approach opens up new travel opportunities.

Planning a trip or move abroad? An important part of a successful trip is a travel insurance policy, as it guarantees high-quality medical care anywhere in the world and can protect you from unnecessary expenses while travelling.  You can buy insurance from trusted agents on the Visit World portal.

Girona - an alternative to Barcelona

Barcelona is the most visited city in Spain, and the authorities have been forced to curb evening tourism and cruise passengers to reduce the impact on residents.

Instead of dealing with the crowds, try Girona, which is less than an hour's train ride from Barcelona in the Catalonia region.

The city has architectural treasures for history buffs: imposing medieval walls, a labyrinthine Jewish quarter, and a majestic pale stone cathedral.

If you come here to eat, then, according to the price comparison website Numbeo, food in Girona is about 25 per cent cheaper than in Barcelona.

Bodrum is an alternative to Saint-Tropez

If you're looking for sea, sand and glamour at affordable prices, consider a trip to Turkey's Turquoise Coast instead of France's Côte d'Azur.

The coast of the Bodrum peninsula is lined with resorts with direct access to the sea.

Head to the city centre for high life at the Yacht Club and mouth-watering Turkish mezze at the always-crowded Gemibaşı restaurant.

You can splurge on a popular hotel, but there are also plenty of budget accommodation options, and boat trips and seaplane rides won't break the bank.

Treviso - an alternative to Venice

Treviso doesn't have a Bridge of Sighs, but it does have attractive rivers lined with historic palaces and green weeping willows.

The city is less than half an hour from Venice by train or car, and there is an airport nearby.

Instead of fighting the crowds in the lagoon city, enjoy Treviso's elegant arcades and fortress-walled buildings at your leisure.

Wine lovers will appreciate the proximity to the grape-carpeted hills that produce the high-quality prosecco of Conegliano Valdobbiadene.

Procida is an alternative to Capri

The island of Capri off the Amalfi Coast of Italy has long attracted tourists with its chic hotels and luxury boutiques. But for a much more affordable and down-to-earth holiday, head to the island of Procida off the coast of Naples.

It is called the island of pastel-coloured fishermen's houses. A three-hour private boat tour costs just 30 euros, and a five-hour night kayaking tour costs 50 euros.

Puglia is an alternative to Santorini

If the nightly battle at sunset in Santorini for the best photo between influencers with selfie sticks is not for you, have a look at Puglia in southern Italy.

This region, with about 800 kilometres of coastline, has dreamy beaches and dramatic cliffs like an island in Greece

It also has its own version of the iconic white houses of Santorini. Puglia's idiosyncratic trulli are round buildings with conical roofs that were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.
