The EURES Shortage and Surplus Report 2023 shows that Sweden is experiencing an acute shortage of workers in almost 40 occupations. According to Schengen.News, the sectors of health care, education, security, repair and maintenance were the most affected.

How many work permits did Sweden issue?
Statistics from the country's Migration Agency show that Sweden issued 11,760 work permits between January and May 2024, a 30 percent increase over the same months in 2023.
In addition, employment became the most common reason for obtaining a residence permit during the first five months of 2024.
The largest number of work permits were issued for positions requiring certain experience, as well as for people whose professions are related to service, care, sales, construction and production.

Citizens of the European Union, the European Economic Area and Switzerland do not need a work visa to work in Sweden.

The employer must also provide the employee with medical and social insurance.
