May is one of the best months for traveling in Europe: comfortable temperatures, long sunny days, and no summer crowds. During this period, in many Mediterranean countries, the air warms up to +23...+27°C, and the number of sunny hours reaches 8-11 per day, which already allows you to plan a full-fledged beach vacation.

However, not all European resorts are equally suitable for swimming in late spring. The water can remain cool and the weather can be unstable. That's why it's important to choose proven destinations. According to The Independent, there are at least seven locations where it is already consistently warm and comfortable for a beach vacation in May.

This selection includes places where you can combine warm sea, good weather, and a relatively low tourist season without too much hype.

Gozo, Malta

Gozo is a quieter alternative to Malta's main island, perfect for a crowd-free May vacation. During this period, the average air temperature is around +24°C, and the sunshine is up to 9 hours a day, which creates comfortable conditions for both beach vacations and island exploration.

Getting here is easy: the ferry from Malta takes about 45 minutes, which makes Gozo convenient even for a short trip. The island is small (about 67 km²), but well-organized - there are about 15 bus routes, so you can get around without a car.

A separate advantage of Gozo is the combination of nature and history. The capital, Victoria (Rabat), with its medieval citadel, museums, and cathedral, is worth a visit. Nearby is an open-air market where you can buy local products and souvenirs. The atmosphere here is much calmer than in more touristy places in the Mediterranean.

For swimming, a trip to the neighboring island of Comino is best - it is there that the famous Blue Lagoon with clear turquoise water is located. In May, there are no summer crowds here, so this is one of the few chances to see this place without crowded beaches.

In the previous article, we talked about 3 underrated European destinations for summer vacations.

Seville, Spain

Seville is not a classic beach resort, but it is one of the warmest destinations in Europe in May, where the temperature stays around +26°C. That is why it is often chosen as a base for traveling with the opportunity to combine city vacations with trips to the ocean - the nearest beaches of the Costa de la Luz are about 1-1.5 hours away.

The city attracts people primarily for its architecture and atmosphere. Here you can see Seville Cathedral, one of the largest Gothic churches in the world, as well as the royal Alcazar Palace, known for its combination of Moorish and European styles. In May, there is no exhausting summer heat, so walking around the city is much more comfortable.

Another plus is gastronomy. There are many traditional bars in Seville that serve tapas at affordable prices. One of the most famous is El Rinconcillo, which is considered the oldest bar in the city. It's a good place to experience the local atmosphere without the touristy overpayments.

If you want the sea, you should plan a trip to the Atlantic coast, for example, to Cadiz or Huelva. In May, it's already warm enough for walks along the ocean, and on sunny days, for swimming, although the water will be cooler than in the Mediterranean.

Thessaloniki, Greece

Thessaloniki is one of the best options for those who want to combine a city vacation with the sea without unnecessary logistics. In May, it's already consistently warm here - about +25°C, with lots of sun and a comfortable atmosphere without the summer heat. At the same time, there are significantly fewer tourists than in June and August.

The city is located on the Aegean coast, and although there are no classic beaches in the center, you can get to good swimming spots in just 20-40 minutes. The most popular options are Perea, Agia Triada and the beaches of the Halkidiki peninsula, where the water is cleaner and the beaches are wider. In May, the sea is still refreshing, but on warm days it is already quite suitable for swimming.

Thessaloniki is also interesting in terms of history and culture. Here is the White Tower, a symbol of the city on the waterfront, as well as the Gallery Arch and the rotunda, dating back to the IV century. The old town has preserved its medieval walls, and the modern districts offer an active nightlife, especially along Egnatia Street.

A separate advantage is the prices. Compared to the popular Greek islands, Thessaloniki is often cheaper for both accommodation and food. This makes the destination a good choice for those who want to get the most out of their trip without overpaying, but without sacrificing the quality of their vacation.

Bodrum, Turkey

Bodrum is one of the warmest destinations in this selection, with temperatures reaching +27°C in May and up to 11 hours of sunshine per day. This is already a full-fledged start to the beach season: the sea warms up faster than in most European resorts, and on sunny days, swimming is quite comfortable.

The resort is located on the Aegean coast and is known for its turquoise waters and picturesque bays. There are many different beaches here: from those equipped with sun loungers and bars to more secluded and quiet ones. If you want a quieter vacation, you should pay attention to the neighboring villages: Yalikavak, Turgutreis or Gümüşlük.

Bodrum also has a strong historical component. In the city center is the Bodrum Castle of the XV century, which is well preserved and is one of the main attractions of the region. Nearby is the promenade with restaurants and cafes where you can taste seafood and traditional Turkish cuisine.

Another reason to choose Bodrum in May is the balance between activity and tranquility. The resort is already “coming to life” after winter: bars, clubs and restaurants are opening, but there is no peak summer tourist influx yet. This allows you to enjoy the atmosphere without queues and crowded beaches.

Formentera, Spain

Formentera is the smallest of the Balearic Islands, which in May remains much calmer than neighboring Ibiza. The air temperature here is around +24°C, there is a lot of sun, and the sea is already gradually warming up, especially on quiet, calm days. This is one of the best options for those looking for clean beaches without crowds.

The main advantage of the island is its nature. Formentera is known for its turquoise waters and white sand beaches, which are often compared to the Caribbean. The most popular locations are Cala Saona and Es Pujols, but even in May, you can find quiet areas without a large number of tourists.

The island can only be reached by ferry, most often from Ibiza. This is what partially restrains mass tourism and preserves a more intimate atmosphere. An important caveat: during the summer season, the number of cars is limited, but in May these rules are not so strict, so it is easier to get around the island.

Formentera is well suited for a slow vacation - cycling, beach relaxation and short trips between villages. This is not a place for active nightlife, but it is ideal if you want quiet, beautiful landscapes and clear sea without the typical resort noise.

Earlier, we talked about the 5 most beautiful medieval cities in Europe for an incredible historical journey.

Sorrento, Italy

Sorrento is one of the most atmospheric destinations in Southern Italy, which in May is already fully prepared for the tourist season, but without the summer overload. The air temperature here reaches +26°C, there is a lot of sun, and nature is in peak form - lemon and orange orchards are blooming, which adds a special charm to the vacation.

The city is located on the cliffs above the Gulf of Naples, and this is what creates its unique look. The beaches here are mostly small and rocky, but very picturesque. In May, the water can still be refreshing, but on warm days, swimming is already quite comfortable, especially in cozy bays.

Sorrento is also convenient as a base for travel. It is easy to get to the Amalfi Coast, Naples, or the island of Capri. This allows you to combine a beach vacation with a rich program: from excursions to gastronomic trips.

In the city center, it is worth taking a stroll through Piazza Tasso, where restaurants, bars, and shops are concentrated. Nearby is the 14th-century church of San Francesco and cozy streets with a traditional Italian atmosphere. In May, these places look much calmer than in the height of summer, which makes your vacation more comfortable.

Cascais, Portugal

Cascais is a convenient and at the same time underrated option for a May vacation, especially if you want to combine the ocean and the city. The resort is located just 40 minutes from Lisbon, and the average temperature in May is around +23°C with many sunny days.

The beaches here are varied: from small cozy coves to open ocean coasts. The water in the Atlantic is cooler than in the Mediterranean, but on warm days, swimming is possible, especially for those who are used to more refreshing temperatures. Instead, Cascais is ideal for surfing, walking along the ocean, and outdoor activities.

In addition to beaches, the city has an interesting cultural component. It is worth visiting the Casa de Santa Maria, an elegant 19th-century mansion, as well as the Santa Marta Lighthouse Museum. There are many restaurants along the waterfront that serve fresh seafood, which is one of the main gastronomic reasons to come here.

Another advantage is the atmosphere. Cascais is less touristy than many popular resorts in Europe, but at the same time it is well developed and comfortable. In May, there are no crowds, prices are not yet at their peak, and the weather already allows you to fully enjoy the ocean and outdoor recreation.
