Seoul was named the world’s best major city for digital nomads in 2026. The South Korean capital scored 73.60 out of 100, ahead of Tokyo and Hanoi. At the same time, Japan had the most cities in the top 10: Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya made the list. The study covered 104 cities and took into account the density of workspaces, internet speed, cost of living, the number of establishments and cultural attractions, as well as the number of days with pleasant weather.

The final ranking included 104 major cities worldwide, with Seoul taking first place with a score of 73.60 out of 100. Tokyo trailed by just one point, while Hanoi took third place. Overall, the ranking clearly demonstrates Asia’s dominance: 7 of the top 10 cities are located in this region.

Japan has the most cities in the top 10: Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya. Vietnam is represented by two cities—Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City—while Europe is represented by just two Spanish cities—Barcelona and Madrid.

The gap between the leaders is small, but their strengths differ. Seoul stands out for its fast internet and abundance of workspaces; Tokyo for its vast selection of leisure activities and cultural attractions; and Hanoi for its low prices and record concentration of workspaces. Therefore, a city’s final ranking doesn’t necessarily mean it will be the best fit for a specific digital nomad.

Seoul, Tokyo, and Hanoi: Why They Topped the Rankings

The top three cities show that for digital nomads, it’s not just one advantage that matters, but rather a balance between cost, infrastructure, internet, and the quality of the urban environment. At the same time, each of the three cities has its own strengths.

Seoul took first place with a score of 73.60 points. There are approximately 59.67 work-friendly spaces per square kilometer, and the average internet download speed is 69.27 Mbps. At the same time, the cost of living is about 36% lower than the U.S. benchmark, making the city competitive not only in terms of infrastructure but also in terms of cost of living.

Tokyo scored 72.61 points and came in second. Its main advantage is its vibrant urban environment: about 395.12 recreational facilities per km², the highest figure among the top ten cities, as well as 12.71 cultural sites per km². For those who combine work with an active urban lifestyle, this is one of the strongest options in the ranking.

Hanoi took third place with 71.86 points, but in some specific metrics, it even outperforms the leaders. The city recorded 96.88 workplaces per km², and its price level is nearly 71% lower than the U.S. benchmark. The city also has about 180 days a year with comfortable weather for work. The main drawback is the internet: download speeds are only 16.12 Mbps, which is significantly lower than in Seoul or Tokyo.

This difference clearly illustrates the logic behind the ranking. Seoul wins on overall balance, Tokyo on urban infrastructure and leisure, and Hanoi on affordability and the number of workspaces.

Why has Japan become one of the best destinations for remote workers?

Japan was the biggest surprise in the ranking: three of its cities made it into the top 10. Tokyo took 2nd place, Osaka 5th, and Nagoya 9th. No other country is represented so extensively in the top ten.

The strength of Japanese cities lies in their combination of stable digital infrastructure, safety, public transportation, and a large number of places where people can work outside the home. Tokyo stands out in particular, with approximately 395.12 leisure facilities per km²—the highest figure among the top 10 cities.

Osaka also boasts a very vibrant urban environment, with about 350.27 leisure facilities per km². While the city trails Tokyo slightly in the overall score, it remains one of the most convenient options for those who want to live in a major Japanese city without the scale of the capital.

Nagoya ranked 9th and posted good internet speeds—about 58.72 Mbps. Its weak point is the climate: only 83 days a year meet the criteria for comfortable weather, which is the lowest figure among the top 15 in the ranking.

For digital nomads, it’s also important to consider visa requirements. Japan offers a separate Digital Nomad Visa, which allows you to stay in the country for up to six months, provided you meet the requirements regarding income, insurance, and citizenship. Therefore, the high rankings of Japanese cities are supported not only by a comfortable work environment but also by the real opportunity to legally spend several months in the country.

Barcelona and Madrid—the top European cities in the ranking

Only two cities represent Europe in the top 10, and both are in Spain. Barcelona ranked 6th with a score of 68.11 points, while Madrid ranked 7th with 66.67 points. This makes Spain the strongest European country in the ranking for digital nomads.

Barcelona outperforms Madrid primarily in terms of urban infrastructure and climate. The city has about 104.83 leisure facilities per km², 8.97 cultural sites per km², and approximately 164 days per year with pleasant weather. That’s 43 days more than in Madrid.

Madrid, on the other hand, remains a strong option for those who value a large labor market, transportation accessibility, and a stable digital infrastructure. According to the study, Spain also had the highest upload speed among the countries in the top 15—36.71 Mbps.

For digital nomads, Spain has another important advantage—a special status for remote workers. It allows foreigners who work remotely for companies or clients outside of Spain to legally reside in the country, provided they meet requirements regarding income, professional experience, and insurance.

It is precisely this combination of climate, infrastructure, European-level services, and a clear mechanism for legal residency that explains why Barcelona and Madrid remain among the top European destinations for digital nomads.

Where is it cheapest for a digital nomad to live?

A high ranking doesn’t always mean high costs. On the contrary, some of the Asian cities in the top 10 attract digital nomads precisely because of their combination of developed infrastructure and a relatively low cost of living. According to the study, the largest difference from the U.S. price benchmark was recorded in Vietnam.

Among the top ten cities, the most affordable in terms of prices are:

2. Ho Chi Minh City — approximately 70% cheaper

3. Taipei — approximately 57% cheaper

4. São Paulo — approximately 53% cheaper

5. Seoul — approximately 36% cheaper

This makes Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City particularly attractive for those who work online and want to reduce their monthly expenses without completely giving up the benefits of a big city and developed infrastructure. At the same time, low prices should be evaluated alongside internet quality, housing availability in a specific area, transportation, and visa regulations.

For a long-term stay, it’s also important to consider not only average prices but also housing rent, insurance, taxes, and coworking costs. It’s these budget items that often make the biggest difference between a short trip and several months of living in a city.

What should you consider before choosing a city for remote work?

Even the top spot in the ranking doesn’t mean a city is automatically suitable for long-term residence. Before moving, digital nomads should check not only prices and Wi-Fi speed but also residency requirements, tax implications, and actual monthly expenses.

First and foremost, pay attention to:

- Visa regulations—tourist status doesn’t always allow you to work remotely during a long-term stay

- The duration of legal residence and the possibility of extending it

- Tax residency—spending a few months in a country can create new tax obligations

- The cost of rent, security deposits, utilities, and coworking spaces

- Internet stability, not just the advertised average speed

- Time zone, especially if your team or clients are based in Europe or North America

- Health insurance, which is often a mandatory requirement for obtaining a special visa

- Climate and seasonality, as comfortable conditions for a few weeks don’t always mean comfort throughout the year

How was the ranking of the best cities for digital nomads compiled?

The study covered 150 major cities worldwide, but after screening, the final ranking included 104 cities for which a complete set of comparable data could be gathered. Each city received an overall score out of 100 points.

The authors took into account several practical indicators that directly impact the lives of digital nomads:

- Number of places suitable for working;

- Internet speed;

- Cost of living;

- Number of leisure facilities;

- Number of cultural attractions;

- Number of days with comfortable weather.

The climate was evaluated separately. Days were considered comfortable when the average temperature ranged from +15°C to +28°C and precipitation did not exceed 5 mm. That is why cities with a warm but not overly hot climate received an additional advantage.
