The most famous university in Romania is located in the capital. The University of Bucharest is known for its quality education and interesting programs. Babes Boyia University in Cluj-Napoca and Alexander Ioan Cus University in Iasi are also good institutions. Western University of Timisoara is also known for its scientific and technology programs.
Together with the Academy of Economic Studies in Bucharest, these four universities form the Universitara consortium – the elite schools of Romania.
Today, the Romanian education system follows the Bologna process and offers public and private institutions where you can obtain bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees.
Let's add that Romania also participates in Erasmus. Erasmus allows you to complete a semester, a year or even an entire qualification or internship abroad. Your nationality does not matter, you just need to study at a school that participates in Erasmus.
What documents are required for admission to a university?
There is no central application portal in Romania. You apply to individual universities through their websites. In general, the list of documents that you need to submit for admission may differ slightly, depending on the chosen university and field. In general, for admission to a Romanian university, you must submit:
Certificate of secondary school education. To study at a graduate school, you need to present a bachelor's degree.
A certified copy of the birth certificate.
Copy of passport and four passport-size photos.
Medical reference.
Completed application process.
Some universities also require you to submit a police background check.
All documents must be submitted in original with notarized Romanian translations. Upon arrival in Romania, you will need to submit all these documents to the university for final confirmation of your enrollment.
Please note that a foreigner who enters the territory of Romania in connection with the start or continuation of higher education must have financial resources of at least 2 000 euros.
Can a foreigner apply for scholarships in Romania?
Every year, the Romanian government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, awards a number of scholarships to citizens of non-EU countries. Only candidates with good academic results are eligible. Under this scholarship program, candidates can choose any study program in all fields except medicine, dentistry and pharmacy. For bachelor's and master's degrees, only study programs in the Romanian language are available, which promotes the promotion of the Romanian language and culture. However, at the doctoral level, students can also choose a program in English or a foreign language taught at the university.
