Foreigners from countries that allow visa-free entry can come to Romania for treatment without additional visas, provided that their stay does not exceed 90 days. If a foreigner goes to Romania for long-term treatment (more than three months), he should issue a national visa D.

Foreigners who enter Romania under the visa regime must obtain a national visa for treatment abroad.

A visa issued in Romania for medical reasons is often called a medical visa, although legally it is a national visa, the application for which states "treatment abroad" as the purpose of the trip. All persons traveling to Romania for treatment are advised to indicate during the visa application process that the visa application is for medical reasons. This way, consulate officials will be able to take into account the wishes and purpose of the applicant's trip at the very beginning of the procedure and make a decision based on this information.

Please note that when crossing the border, border guards may ask you for an invitation from the clinic or medical facility where you will be treated. An invitation (certificate) from a medical institution should be obtained before crossing the border.
