Nowadays, the Slovenian education system adheres to the Bologna process and offers public and private institutions where you can get bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees.
Slovenia has only three public universities – the University of Ljubljana (Univerza v Ljubljani, founded in 1919), the University of Maribor, and the University of Primorska. They are complemented by ten private higher education institutions (samostojni visokosolski zavodi) and a number of specialized universities (art academies, etc.) The largest of the universities, the University of Ljubljana, was founded in 1919.
Education in most cases involves knowledge of the Slovenian language, but there are courses that are taught in English. You can take language training courses at the Slovenian Language Center at the University of Ljubljana.
In addition, the Erasmus program is operational in Slovenia. Erasmus allows students to spend a semester or a year abroad. Participation in the program does not depend on your nationality, but on whether you are studying at the university participating in the program.
What documents are required for admission to the university?
In general, the list of documents that you need to submit for admission may vary slightly, depending on the chosen university and faculty. In general, to enter the Slovenian university you need to submit:
Application form.
A valid passport and passport-sized photos.
A high school diploma or degree certificate, depending on the level you are applying for.
Sufficient level of English or Slovenian language proficiency, confirmed by the results of the language test.
More information about admission and the necessary documents can be found on the official websites of the university.
Who can apply for scholarships in Slovenia?
State scholarships in Slovenia are distributed by the Centre of the Republic of Slovenia for Mobility and European Educational and Training Programmes (CMEPIUS – Center za mobilnost in evropske programe izobrazevanja in usposabljanja Slovenije). CMEPIUS scholarships are awarded annually to students from countries with which bilateral agreements have been signed and student exchange programs are implemented in Bulgaria, Hungary, Greece, Egypt, Italy, Israel, China, Mexico, Poland, the Russian Federation, Slovakia, Serbia, Montenegro, Turkey, Croatia, and the Czech Republic. A certain number of scholarships are also awarded to candidates from Austria, Germany, Japan, Spain, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Switzerland. They are mainly intended for students who already have a basic university education, and for research scientists. The main purpose of the scholarships is to support international students who want to complete part of their education under the guidance of a professor from Slovenia. Therefore, a scholarship is awarded only if confirmation from one of the higher educational institutions in Slovenia is attached to the application. Applicants must be proficient in Slovenian or any other language agreed by the supervisor.
The Ad Futura Foundation works mainly with Slovenian citizens, but also allocates scholarships for the following categories of foreigners: graduate students and scientists participating in joint programs with Slovenian colleagues to conduct research in Slovenian higher education institutions. For example, grants for research in the field of natural sciences, technology, and biotechnology for graduate students are allocated for a period of 3 to 12 months. But the number of scholarships is small.
If you are a European citizen, the only thing you will need to stay in Slovenia for studying is a valid travel document or passport.
If you are not a European citizen, you need a national visa to enter and stay in Slovenia to study.
