1. Microchip for pets
Sudan does not require your pet to be microchipped, but it is recommended that you microchip the pet prior to travel and register the pet's contact information as a means of identification in case the pet is lost or separated from you.
If your pet does not have a registered microchip, make sure your pets are tagged with owner identification and contact information.
2. Vaccination
Your pet must be vaccinated against rabies between 30 days and 12 months before entering the country.
Dogs must be vaccinated against the following diseases: Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parovirus and Parainfluenza. Cats must be vaccinated against the following diseases: Feline Panleukopenia (Distemper), viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus and leukemia.
3. Rabies test
A rabies test is not required to enter Sudan from any country.
4. Veterinary certificate
A veterinary health certificate for Sudan must be completed by a licensed veterinarian in the country of origin right before travel. We recommend that a USDA- or CFIA-accredited veterinarian fill out the form and you certify it to the USDA or CFIA if you are traveling from the US or Canada. If there is a Sudanese consulate in your country, you should contact them to confirm that the form does not require assurance.
5. Import permit
An import permit is not required when entering Sudan with your own pet.
6. Treatment from ticks and tapeworms
Treatment for ticks and tapeworms is not required before entering Sudan, but is recommended due to the unavailability of these drugs in the country.
7. Entry into Sudan by air
Pets must enter Sudan through Khartoum International Airport. Pets can be imported as checked baggage or air cargo.
When traveling to a foreign country such as Sudan, it is always recommended to carry an ID document proving ownership of the animal.
All domestic dogs and cats must be free of signs of human-transmissible disease upon inspection at the airport of entry. If your dog or cat is clearly unwell, further examination by a licensed veterinarian may be required at your expense.
8. Other animals
Birds, invertebrates, tropical fish, reptiles, amphibians, mammals such as rodents and rabbits are not required to be vaccinated against rabies, but may meet other requirements and must have a health certificate to enter Sudan. Pet owners are strongly advised to contact the relevant authorities in their country and/or country of destination for further information.
9. CITES
If your pet is not a dog, cat or ferret, and especially if it is a turtle or parrot, you should make sure that it is not protected by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). In this case, you will have to apply for additional permissions. More than 180 countries participate in and enforce the CITES Convention.
Sudan does not recognize local driver's licenses from other countries unless they are accompanied by an international driver's permit. If you have a local driver's license and want to drive in this country, you must apply for an IDP. Like your local rights, the IDP contains information such as your details and photo. You cannot use this permission for other operations.
The legal driving age in Sudan is 18, so tourists who have reached this age and have a valid local driver's license can apply for an international driver's license in Sudan. The IDP has made it possible for tourists to drive in Sudan, so if you plan to visit and drive in the country, apply for an international permit first.
