As a foreign driver, you must obtain an international driver's license when traveling in Suriname, it is better to have a passport and a tourist visa with you to avoid problems with law enforcement agencies.
You can travel to Suriname if you are 18 years old. But to rent a car, you must be at least 21 years old. Car rental companies in Suriname will require a valid identification that contains your personal information, including your date of birth, before providing you with their services. If you are under the age of 25, there is a mandatory additional fee due to the risks of younger drivers. To keep you calm, car insurance is essential when renting a car.
The maximum speed on Suriname's motorways is 90 km/h. You can drive at 40 km/h in urban areas and 60 km/h on paved roads outside of populated areas.
As a former Dutch colony, most road signs in Suriname are in Dutch. They have speed limit signs, priority signs, traffic control signs, warning signs, prohibition and mandatory traffic signs, positive signs, information and signposts.
