Birth of a child

According to the National Health Insurance Law, newborn children of foreigners legally residing in Taiwan are automatically entitled to universal health care, CNA reported.

All others must cover the costs themselves by purchasing health insurance in advance.

Future parents need to choose a hospital or clinic where they want to give birth. The best way to choose a hospital is to get a recommendation from someone who has given birth there.

After giving birth, there are also several maternity centers (postnatal care centers) for new mothers, especially in Taipei. These centers focus on parenting, exercise, breastfeeding and infant care.

It is advisable to book a place in the maternity center at least six months before the birth.
