Immigration to Togo for Angola citizenship

Recognizes dual citizenship, except for people who have obtained citizenship as a result of naturalization. 

Togo citizenship can be obtained at birth, by origin, or later in life by naturalization.

By birth

Those who acquire citizenship at birth include:

• children who were born to those who permanently reside in the country. The child's parents must also be born to Togo.
• children who were born to a Togolese mother and a father who is unknown, with or without unknown citizenship, must follow an Administrative Procedure to obtain citizenship.
• children who were born in a country that would otherwise be stateless.
• or foundlings or orphans under the age of five whose parents are unknown.

By Origin

Children who were born abroad to a Togolese father receive citizenship automatically.

By naturalization

Naturalization can be granted to people who have lived in the territory for a sufficient period of time to confirm that they understand one of the languages of Togo, the Customs and traditions of Togo and are integrated into society. The general provisions are that applicants must have good mental and physical health, good behavior, not have criminal convictions that led to a conviction of more than two years, and be fundamentally interested in the development of Togo. Applicants usually have to live in the country for five years. 

In addition to foreigners who meet the criteria, other persons who may be naturalized include:

• children who were born in Togo to foreigners who are of legal age and have lived in Togo since the age of sixteen can choose citizenship by registration without the discretion of the authorities.
• children legally adopted by a Togolese parent can obtain Togolese citizenship at the time of completion of legal adoption, if this is in the best interests of the child.
• children can be automatically naturalized when their parents acquire citizenship.
• the legal wife of a Togo citizen.
• people who have exceptional services to the country can become naturalized without a period of residence.

Loss of citizenship

Togo citizens can renounce their citizenship while awaiting approval from the state and confirmation that they have obtained another citizenship. Individuals can be denaturalized in Togo for having dual citizenship, this applies only to naturalized Togolese. They may also lose their citizenship for performing actions such as voting or running for political office in another state, working for a foreign state or the military without the permission of the authorities, disloyalty to the state; committing crimes against the state or state security. 

Dual citizenship

Togolese law prohibits dual citizenship, but only for naturalized people who must renounce another citizenship in order to obtain Togolese citizenship. Dual citizenship is allowed for married women who automatically obtained another citizenship after marrying a foreign husband.
