The information about these changes was announced by the speaker of the Polish government, Piotr Mueller, in a recent interview with PAP. These changes concern some types of social assistance provided to Ukrainian refugees in Poland.

Why was it necessary to change the social security for Ukrainian refugees in Poland?

Piotr Mueller identified two main reasons that prompted the Polish government to make these changes. Firstly, he noted that the number of Ukrainians arriving in Poland as refugees has significantly decreased. This applies to both new refugees and those already in Poland. According to him, the decrease in the flow of refugees may be an indicator that many Ukrainians have already found jobs and stable living conditions in Poland.

Secondly, he noted that the decision to provide assistance to Ukrainian refugees was made for an expiring period. The legislation provided for a certain period of validity of these decisions, and they were focused on a certain time period.

What types of assistance for refugees from Ukraine in Poland are being canceled?

According to the announcement of Piotr Mueller, the Polish government is suspending the payment of certain types of assistance to Ukrainian citizens. These types of assistance include the following:

1. 400 Plus payments: a monthly payment of 400 zlotys, which is approximately 3 thousand hryvnias, to parents whose children are in kindergartens;

2. Payments under the Rodzinny kapitał opiekuńczy (RKO) program: This program provides up to 1 thousand zlotys, which is approximately equal to a little over 8 thousand hryvnias, for children aged 1 to 3 years;

3. Family 500+ child benefits: The program provided monthly payments of 500 PLN, which is approximately 4 thousand hryvnias.

When should we expect the payments for Ukrainians in Poland to be canceled?

Piotr Mueller said that the payments are likely to be canceled in the first quarter of 2024. According to him, given the fact that Ukrainians are no longer traveling abroad en masse, it makes no sense to continue these payments. The decisions on the provision of assistance are expiring and will not be extended.

What do these changes mean for Ukrainian refugees in Poland?

These changes in the conditions for receiving social benefits in Poland may affect the financial situation of Ukrainian refugees. Reduction or cancellation of these benefits may affect their budget and their ability to provide for their families.

At the same time, it is important to keep in mind that the changes only apply to certain types of benefits, and refugees may still have access to other social programs and services provided in Poland. In addition, many Ukrainian refugees are able to find work and create stable conditions for themselves and their families, making them less dependent on state aid.

Thus, the changes in the conditions for receiving social benefits for Ukrainian refugees in Poland were the result of the changing situation and migration flows. The Polish government believes that they may stop paying some types of assistance as Ukrainians are traveling abroad less and less. These changes may have an impact on the financial situation of individual refugees, but it is also important to remember that Ukrainian refugees in Poland may seek opportunities to create stable conditions for themselves and their families, including finding employment and other sources of income.
