Dutch anti-poverty experiment: additional 150 euros for 600 families
A new project called "Just Give Money" has been launched in the Netherlands to support low-income families with additional funds. As part of the project, 600 families will receive €150 per month for 2 years. Learn more about the details of the “Just Give Money” project in the Netherlands
The “Just Give Money” project, initiated by the Dutch charity foundation Kansfonds, has been launched in Zanstad. The goal is to assess the impact of an additional 150 euros per month on 600 families receiving social assistance.
The experiment is funded mainly by Postcodeloterij. Later this year, it will be extended to Amsterdam and Tilburg. The amount of 150 euros is the maximum amount that families living on social assistance can receive to avoid a reduction in benefits. The project aims to investigate how additional financial resources affect the quality of life of low-income families.
Poor families will receive additional money with no strings attached
The Kansfond program seeks to find out how additional money affects the lives of people living in poverty without any strings attached. Similar studies have been conducted in the United States, Canada, and Scandinavian countries. The results showed that families that received additional funds were more likely to find full-time work and have fewer health problems. Children in these families also demonstrated better academic performance.
As part of this program, 150 households in the city of Zaanstad will receive an additional 150 euros per month. For comparison purposes, a control group of 150 households will be created that will not receive the extra money. All of these households consist of single-parent families receiving social assistance from the Dutch government.
The amount of 150 euros was chosen because it is the maximum amount of additional payments that would not lead to a reduction in social assistance.

Research on the poverty rate in the Netherlands
According to the Office of Social and Cultural Planning, more than 800,000 people in the Netherlands live in poverty, including more than 200,000 children. Nadia Jungmann, a lecturer on debt at the Utrecht University of Applied Sciences, emphasizes the lack of quality research on poverty and debt in the country. She notes that it is now possible to really see the impact of additional money on the family budget, which is theoretically sufficient.
Based on previous research in other countries, Kansfonds believes that the donations will be spent wisely by families and will reduce their stress, allowing them to start planning for the future. Bas Peek of Kansfonds told NOS that people living in poverty know best what to spend the money on. "If there is a deficit every month, you have to solve this problem first. Then there is no point in focusing on changing behavior with the help of coaches and job training," - he emphasized.
This study is interesting precisely because of the opportunity to observe real changes in the lives of families. The absence of financial stress can allow them to focus on other aspects of life, including education, health, and long-term planning.
Researchers from the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS) will conduct questionnaires and interviews to find out how different groups of participants have coped with their tasks over the course of two years.
Mirre Spalen, lead researcher of the Poverty Intervention program, said that advisors and charities are already predicting positive effects, similar to the results of foreign studies. However, the Dutch situation, with its extensive social safety net, is unique.
