New Zealand is a dream country for many expats, as the country has stunning landscapes, vibrant culture and exciting job prospects. A good way to come to New Zealand for temporary residence is to obtain a seasonal work visa. The procedure for obtaining a New Zealand seasonal work visa and renewals approved in 2025 is further in this article.

Why do foreigners choose a seasonal work visa to New Zealand in 2025?

There are many reasons why New Zealand can be a good place for seasonal work for citizens of many countries, including representatives of Kenya, Cameroon and Myanmar:

1. Gaining new experience - foreigners can improve their skills through training programs.

2. Competitive wages - foreigners will receive an attractive hourly wage from NZ$29.66.

3. Popular Industries – You will gain valuable experience in world-renowned sectors such as horticulture, viticulture and tourism.

4. Flexible work options – You can work in different regions or with different employers.

New Seasonal Work Visa Subcategory in New Zealand

New Zealand introduced a new subcategory of the Special Work Visa in 2025. It provides a seamless application process for those who want to work in agriculture (harvesting), tourism (ski instructor) or tree planting.

- Work requirements for the new Seasonal Work Visa Subcategory:

Work must start no later than 31 May 2025 and last for nine months.

Exceptions: Industries such as horticulture, viticulture and fishing are already covered by existing visa programs.

- Employer requirements for a seasonal work visa in New Zealand:

1. Be accredited by Immigration New Zealand.

2. Pay a minimum wage of NZ$29.66 per hour for at least 30 hours per week.

3. Advertise the vacancy locally and provide proof of the absence of the required workers.

- Application deadline:

The visa application must be submitted by March 31, 2025, as this temporary initiative is to address urgent labor needs.

What will change in the New Zealand Seasonal Work Visa process in 2025?

2025 will see exciting changes that will make seasonal work in New Zealand more accessible and profitable than ever.

1. Increased number of places under the Seasonal Employer (RSE) program

In 2025, the number of places under the Seasonal Work Visa program was increased for the first time since 2007 (from 5,000 places to 20,750 workers), reflecting demand in fast-growing sectors such as kiwifruit production and winemaking.

2. Flexible pay models

Employers must now provide workers with work and appropriate pay for an average of 30 hours per week for four weeks. If weather conditions reduce the availability of work, employers must pay additional wages to meet this minimum, ensuring financial stability even during disruptions.

3. Multiple-entry visas

Seasonal workers can now leave and re-enter New Zealand multiple times during the validity of their visa. This provides greater flexibility for workers.

4. Adjustment to the cost of accommodation for workers

Employers can increase accommodation costs by up to 15% or NZ$15.00 per week, whichever is lower. This adjustment applies to employment contracts signed on or after 2 September 2024, balancing the availability of the worker and the employer’s costs.

5. Changes to health requirements

Certain health requirements for seasonal workers have been removed, including HIV screening. This update aligns the Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) scheme with New Zealand’s broader health visa policy, ensuring a fair application process.

6. Training opportunities

Seasonal workers can now participate in training and development programs that are not related to their specific job duties. This initiative enhances personal and professional growth by offering additional career benefits beyond seasonal work.

7. Increased mobility

Workers can change employers or regions during a 21-day grace period. This additional flexibility allows workers to seek better opportunities or adapt to changing circumstances without jeopardizing their job.

8. Higher pay for experienced workers

Foreigners with three or more seasons of work experience will earn at least NZ$25.47 per hour to reflect their experience. New workers will receive the standard minimum wage.

9. Expanded list of participants

Timor-Leste has been added to the list of participating countries of the RSE program. This change expands opportunities for workers in the Pacific region, addressing the labor shortage and strengthening international cooperation.
